SCI Team Members joined the Maryland Developmental Disability Coalition and other stakeholders for a rally to save developmental disabilities services yesterday at Lawyer’s Mall in Annapolis.

Proposed DDA budget cuts threaten the services that allow thousands of Marylanders with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live, work, and fully participate in their communities.

SCI Team Members joined hundreds of advocates in sending a powerful message to lawmakers about the value of Home and Community Based Services and the needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Beza Gebrehana, Community Engagement Manager, and Kasey Bly, Program Navigator, recently attended the B’More Healthy Expo in Baltimore. They connected with more than 200 people who stopped by the SCI booth, including Jamar, a person supported who also happens to be a five-time Special Olympics medalist!

They provided information to unsupported and underserved community members, ensuring those who need us most can access resources and guidance. This is part of our commitment to expanding access and reducing barriers for every individual seeking information and support.

Visitors were invited to participate in our “What’s Important to You?” activity, during which we asked individuals to write down what’s most important to them. We loved connecting with these individuals to learn about what they value most. Scroll through the photos to take a look at their responses, and let us know – what’s important to you?

Today we recognize , a day to celebrate the independence, leadership, and contributions of wheelchair users, while also acknowledging the accessibility barriers many still face every day.

A recent story from NPR highlights how, even decades after accessibility laws were enacted, travelers who use wheelchairs continue to encounter challenges—from hotel rooms that aren’t truly accessible to reservations that don’t match what was promised.

International Wheelchair Day reminds us that accessibility isn’t just about compliance. It’s about dignity, inclusion, and the freedom to live, work, travel, and participate fully, without barriers.

Let’s keep advocating for spaces and experiences that truly work for everyone.

An NPR survey finds that people with disability still find hotels unaccommodating, even 35 years after passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

David Bright, Supports Planning Program Manager with the ( ) program at Service Coordination, Inc. (SCI), has always loved making a positive impact.

In fact, it was his passion for helping others that inspired David, who was previously an educator, to transition into a career in . “I was excited about working a job in which I could help people live their best lives,” David recalls. “The idea that I could have such an impact on the lives of others made me want to do everything in my power to provide, advocate, and make a difference.”

David, who will celebrate four years at SCI this April, is recognized as a leader among both his peers and the people he supports. David attributes his drive and determination to his family, saying he wants to provide for them while instilling a strong work ethic in his children. “They inspire me to come to work every day,” David says of his family. At work, David is motivated by SCI’s mission and the community members we support, which inspires him to give his best effort, every day.

David recalls previously working with a young man named Daniel, who ultimately lost his battle with cancer. “I think of him every day when I come to work,” David says. “His life and his struggle are always on my mind.” Daniel’s story inspires David to remember that the work being done at SCI truly matters.

David says implementing the Charting the LifeCourse (CtLC) framework, a person-centered planning tool that helps individuals and families plan for the future, and teaching SCI Team Members how to use it effectively, has been one of his proudest professional accomplishments. David played such an instrumental role in integrating the CtLC framework into Service Coordination’s SPS program, he received the Innovations in Person-Centered Practices in Case Management Award at the 2025 Charting the LifeCourse Showcase.

When asked how he inspires others, David says he hopes to inspire people to be their best selves,” saying, “Everyone has strengths, and I hope I encourage individuals to tap into those and not be afraid of greatness.”

In addition to being part of , David also keeps busy with his other job – official Girl Dad to two daughters under the age of two – and enjoys playing pickleball in his free time.

This , please join us in recognizing David for showing us the importance of advocating for others and being our best selves.

“I’ve always wanted to help people,” says Tatiana Thomas, Director of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) at Service Coordination, Inc. (SCI).

Tatiana’s journey to social impact began while working as a merchandiser in the fashion industry, during which she discovered her true passion wasn’t making clothes, but rather, making a difference in the lives of others.

“People of all different roles and levels would come to me and confide in me,” Tatiana recalls. “I would talk to my supervisor on their behalf and make suggestions about what we could do to resolve problems. It was my boss who told me I have a high emotional intelligence and helped me realize I have an innate ability to advocate for others.”

Early career opportunities at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (LCPA), introduced Tatiana to inclusion work and helped shape her career path. While serving as co-chair of the LCPA DEI council, she partnered with the COO (who was also her supervisor) to hire a consulting firm to develop a comprehensive DEI strategy. Afterward, her supervisor encouraged her to connect with the firm and explore what it would take to pursue a career in inclusion consulting, guidance that ultimately helped set her on her current path.

“She was my compass,” Tatiana says of her boss. “She helped steer me in the right direction.”

Tatiana shares that she has been fortunate to have many strong female leaders guide her throughout her career, each offering advice along the way. “Some of the most valuable feedback I’ve ever received is to remember my why – why you’re doing this work and who you are while you’re doing it,” she says. “If any job ever makes you lose sight of that, it’s important to either make a change or be the change.”

Tatiana says working at SCI allows her to live out her “why” every day, noting that her favorite part of her job is being able to be herself while making an impact. “Even remotely, I’ve been able to build relationships across all levels of the organization and show up genuinely as who I am. I hope that in every conversation, I leave a trail for others to learn and grow.”

Tatiana draws inspiration from many places, including her family and the next generation. “My nieces and nephews inspire me to be a better version of myself,” she shares. “I hope that by interacting with people thoughtfully, there’s a ripple effect that makes the world a little better.” Her pride in her personal accomplishments is equally inspiring. “I am most proud of being the first generation in my family to graduate college and pursue a career independently,” she says. “I am living my great-grandmothers’ and grandmothers’ wildest dreams.”

Tatiana hopes her work and presence inspire others to grow both personally and professionally. “I hope I inspire people to be better – not just in what they do, but in who they are. To pursue hobbies and happiness beyond work, to show up as good humans, and to give one another grace,” she says. “You don’t know what you don’t know, and we’re all on a journey to learn how to respect and understand each other.”

Finally, Tatiana shares a message for the next generation of young Black women: “Your hair texture, your skin color, your eye color, the shape of your lips, and the shape of your body don’t determine how Black you are. You don’t need validation of your ethnicity or culture from anyone except yourself. If you can’t find fellowship or community in your family, you can find it in yourself. As long as you’re able to exude that beauty to the world, the community will come to you.”

This , we honor Tatiana for her leadership, her advocacy, and her unwavering commitment to lifting others while staying true to herself.

SCI’s mission is rooted in our commitment to inclusion. Learn more about how IDEA is integrated throughout our organization: https://bit.ly/4rEcJcp.

Meet Tobias Davis, who has been part of since 2022. Starting as a Supports Planner, he has since grown into his current role as Supervising Supports Planner, overseeing teams in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Anne Arundel County.

With a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a fascination with the brain and human behavior, Tobias always knew he wanted to use his education to serve others.

“I’ve always been intrigued by how the brain works - how we think, how we interact, and how our inner thoughts shape us,” he says.

Before joining SCI, Tobias worked as a dialysis technician, providing chairside care to patients with renal failure, a cause close to his heart, as both of his grandmothers passed away from the disease.

His commitment to community-centered care continues to drive his work today, and is one of the reasons why he enjoys working at SCI.

“This was my first corporate setting, and it just fit my lifestyle,” he shares. “You can see it in the culture—people love the work they do. It’s different. There’s no catch.” Tobias also likes working for an organization committed to helping others. “SCI aligns with who I am. I’m a kindhearted person and I like to help people. I’d do it all over again.”

When asked what inspires him most, Tobias says it’s making personal connections and being able to make a difference in the lives of others, no matter how big or small it may be.

“I enjoy feeling someone else’s joy, even when it’s over something small,” Tobias explains. “When you help someone solve a problem and you can feel their relief and trust, that energy means everything. Before I talk about programmatic things, I always ask the people I support how they’re doing. That matters.”

The best advice he’s received came from his aunt: “Make anything work for you. Do something you love - even if you aren’t getting paid for it.” That mindset continues to guide his career and leadership style.

Among his proudest accomplishments is earning his Psychology degree and using it to uplift others; even more than that, he’s proud of his personal growth. “I’m proud of the person I’m becoming and am grateful for the people who have shaped me along the way,” Tobias says. “I am who I am because of them.”

As a leader, Tobias believes in inspiring others by example, stepping in when needed and showing his team how meaningful conversations can make all the difference.

This , we honor Tobias for his empathy, leadership, and commitment to serving his community with heart. Tobias is an example of how our dedicated case managers always put people first.
