Today is National Purple Up Day and we are wearing purple for every military child who has ever had to say goodbye to a parent, pack up their life, or start over in a new school because of their family's service to this country. Nearly 2 million American children have had a deployed parent at least once. On average military children move nine times before finishing high school. April is Stress Awareness Month and we are using it as a moment to shine a light on something important. Stress affects seniors differently than it affects younger adults and the health consequences are serious. Chronic stress in older adults can contribute to heart disease, memory problems, weakened immunity, and depression. About a quarter of older adults experience social isolation, which is one of the biggest drivers of stress in later life. April is Parkinson's Awareness Month and we want to take a moment to recognize the more than 1.1 million Americans living with Parkinson's disease and the families who show up for them every day. For veterans, Parkinson's can be connected to Agent Orange and herbicide exposure during military service. As a result, many veterans with a Parkinson's diagnosis may qualify for VA benefits that help cover the cost of in-home care. Our CEO Dan Rodriguez, Commander of John R. Webb VFW Post 3285, and Post Adjutant Patrick Pierson had the pleasure of welcoming Katrina Thurman Wilkinson and Jason Kimmell from Goodwill Industries International of Central and Northern Arizona for a tour of Veterans of Foreign Wars VFW Post 3285. Katrina comes from a family deeply rooted in military service as a daughter, granddaughter, and wife of veterans and has recently become a lifetime auxiliary member of the post. We are grateful for the connections being built between our veteran community and the organizations that support them.
