The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research is proud to partner with the Frederick Arts Council on an exhibition that celebrates the intersection of art and science. Where Energy Meets Matter showcases artists exploring physics, biology, and the unseen forces that shape our universe—reflecting the innovation happening every day at FNLCR.

Featuring local creators like Lisa Shierer and internationally known artist and mathematician Erik Demaine, the show highlights the creative spark that emerges when scientific discovery inspires artistic expression.

The Where Energy Meets Matter exhibition will run through January 20, 2026, at Gallery 115 inside the Y Arts Center (115 E Church St, Frederick, MD 21701). We invite the community to experience this unique blend of art and innovation.

🌶️ It’s growing season, and many employees in our Cancer Research Technology Program head home from the lab to tend to their chili pepper plants. They trade seeds, share seedlings, and in the fall, gather for a chili pod tasting. Even non-gardeners get to join the fun, enjoying recipes and homemade hot sauces.

While cancer research and pepper cultivation don’t exactly go hand in hand, these scientists still flex their skills. Whether it’s sowing seeds, breeding new variations, controlling pests or making hot sauce, there are countless opportunities to hone scientific skills and optimize pepper growth.

This year, Marjorie and BJ Bosche are celebrating 32 years of marriage and 30 years of service at the Frederick National Laboratory!

Their journey began as grad students at Syracuse University, where they got to know each other as they proctored a lab. Decades later, they’re still side by side – both in life and in science. From advancing HIV research to clinical trial support, they’ve dedicated their careers to advancing biomedical research.
