Mary Washington Healthcare began in 1899 as an eight-room hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Our mission to our community is clear.
Mary Washington Healthcare is a non-profit regional health system with two hospitals, four emergency departments, and over 80 healthcare facilities and wellness services. Today, it has evolved into a non-profit regional system of two hospitals (571 beds), three emergency departments, and over 50 healthcare facilities and wellness services. Our Board of Trustees is made up of community leaders who serve in a volunteer capacity to guide our direction. Mary Washington Healthcare exists to improve the health of the people in the communities we serve. As a non-profit corporation, we invest our profits back into the organization through such activities as upgrading our technology, developing new services and hiring new staff. The result is continuous improvement in the scope and quality of care we’re able to provide to the community.

Our trauma and ICU teams at Mary Washington Hospital had a special visit a couple of weeks ago from a former patient. Chris Stoehr had been in a serious car accident on I-95 in March 2024. His vehicle caught fire and two brave pedestrians pulled him from the wreckage before EMS arrived. He was admitted to Mary Washington Hospital as a John Doe, since all his identification had burned in the fire.
His injuries included multiple fractures, a gastric perforation, respiratory failure, septic shock, and other life-threatening injuries. We'll let Chris tell his story from here:
"The team performed several surgeries to stabilize my stomach before repairing my femur, which was initially thought to require amputation. Their careful sequencing of procedures prevented further complications and allowed me to recover step by step. Throughout my hospitalization, I was supported by a wide range of specialists—surgeons, respiratory therapists, and nurses—who worked together to manage every aspect of my care.
When I regained consciousness, I was welcomed by the physicians and nurses who had overseen my treatment. Dr. Yanoff, Dr. Tessema, Dr. Wright, Dr. Neary, and many others played critical roles, along with respiratory specialists and trauma nurses who monitored me closely. Every decision, from emergency admission to surgical timing, contributed to my survival and recovery.
Since the accident, I have made significant lifestyle changes and regained strength. Most importantly, I recognize that the coordinated expertise of the trauma team at Mary Washington Hospital was the reason I am here today. Their quick action, skill, and dedication ensured the best possible outcome in a situation where every second mattered.
I am forever grateful to Mary Washington Hospital and its incredible team. Please remember to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you—because everything can change in a second."

In 1899, the first Mary Washington Hospital opened and today, Mary Washington Healthcare continues its tradition of caring for the community.
