This week at Deeply Rooted Wellness holds something extra special. It’s my grandma’s 70th birthday. My tiny, mighty, and darling grandmother who’s been living with early-onset Alzheimer’s for the past 10 years.
Over the years, this disease has taken so much, but it’s never taken the love she carries within her. Or the devotion of a 50 year long marriage. My papa continues to provide the most loving, patient, and compassionate care for his sweet wife, day in & day out. Watching him struggle through the daily challenges is also a huge part of my “why” for this cause. This disease truly knows no bounds when it comes to who it affects. The power it has to cripple a unit of a family. Devastating.
I remember her once telling me that elephants with their trunks raised, brings good luck. From then on, I always found myself picking out little elephant trinkets for her. (One could say I maybe went overboard with this throughout the years lol sorry papa) but it truly resembled symbols of love, strength, and connection between us and our family as a whole. Our matriarch that kept our herd of a family in order and connected with love 💜.
It’s beautifully & devastatingly ironic, isn’t it? They say an elephant never forgets. And even as Alzheimer’s works to take memories and other normal ways of living away, her tough cookie & loving spirit remains, even if it only shines through every now & again…it’s still there. Always. 🐘💜
In her honor, my Tuesday & Thursday yoga classes this week will be 100% donation-based, with all proceeds going directly to the Alzheimer’s Association.
If you have a punch card, you’re welcome to use it as usual! If you feel called to give a little extra, donations of any amount are deeply appreciated.
And if you’d like to walk alongside me and my family - our Herd of Love - you can join or donate here:
