On the evening of January 23rd, Freehold EMS units were alerted to respond to the intersection of Kozloski Rd and Colts Neck Rd for a reported pediatric medical emergency. The first FEMS unit arrived with 1 minute of dispatch and was flagged down by a Good Samaritan, Tommy, who had stopped to assist and took over talking to the 911 operator.
Upon arrival, FEMS personnel found a 6 year old who suffered a severe seizure, had vomited, stopped breathing, and was turning blue. The patient was rapidly removed from her car seat to the ground where a rapid assessment was completed, aggressive airway management performed, and critical rescue breathing administered as she began to seize again. Shortly after, our partners from the Atlantic Health Paramedics arrived on scene and both teams of clinicians continued to work towards stabilizing the patient. She was later transported to CentraState Medical Center under police es**rt and then transferred via helicopter to an area specialty pediatric hospital. She spent some time in the pediatric ICU before being discharged home with her family- a positive outcome we are all thankful for.
On February 7th, 6 year old Sophia, her family, and Good Samaritan Tommy Lewis came to visit on duty staff to meet those EMTs and say thank you. They brought the on duty crews lunch, homemade bracelets, keychains, and handwritten thank you cards. They received a station tour, ambulance tour and had a fun filled afternoon with their new Freehold EMS family.
We are beyond grateful that Sophia is doing better and thanks to the quick thinking of our highly skilled EMTs, paramedics, hospital staff, police officers, and our 911 dispatchers, this moment was possible.
