We have hit sugar season! Four holidays in a 2 month(ish) span can create a steady intake of sugar 🍪🍭 At this time of year, additional sugar can be more problematic than just putting on a few extra pounds. Excess sugar consumption can deplete the nutrients needed to keep your immune system working strong.
It is essential to increase your intake of these 4 essential nutrients to keep yourself healthy and feeling good.

1.) Vitamin D - sugar suppresses the enzyme for breaking down sugar so it simultaneously impairs your ability to make vitamin D and makes it useless faster.

2.) Calcium - Sugar’s depletion of vitamin D affects calcium too, because vitamin D is needed for calcium to be absorbed.
So, sugar = less vitamin D = less calcium.

3.) Magnesium - like calcium, sugar makes you lose magnesium faster by blocking reabsorption and plowing through your reserves. That sets the stage for higher blood sugar levels and even lower magnesium.

4.) Vitamin C- both sugar and vitamin C use the same transporter - insulin - to enter cells and when they’re present at the same time, they compete for absorption. Guess who wins....Sugar!

It is nearly impossible to eliminate all the sugar (unless you are really disciplined)...instead focus on including the following foods:
- Oily fish (salmon)
- Egg yolks (good source of Vit D and stabilizes blood sugar)
- Citrus fruits (Great for snacks and smoothies)
- Berries (add to greek yogurt for a dessert)
- Greens (bring a salad to your get together)
- Dark chocolate (go for chocolate 70% cacao or more)
- Nuts (toast walnuts, pecans, almonds..so yummy and filled with magnesium)

That’s right… don’t stress if your food prep doesn’t happen on the day you wish it would or isnt as gourmet as you would like.
Just make one step to prep wholesome food that is easy to grab for your busy days and you will be very thankful.
Side note: making a game of adding equal ingredients to each jar can be fun for young kids and reduces your workload 🙌

Are you mineral deficient? 🤔
*Mineral deficiency has become more common due to soil depletion. Unless you are among the few people that eat everything from an organic garden with nutrient-rich soil, you are likely deficient in one or more minerals.
*The most common mineral deficiencies are potassium and magnesium which are needed to regulate blood pressure, heart function, muscle contraction and nervous system function. 💪*Even if your blood tests show normal levels, they may not be. It can take decades before a mineral deficiency shows up on a blood test. Our body will pull minerals from our organs and bone marrow to maintain blood mineral balance.
*When we drink too much water without minerals like sodium and potassium, it dilutes the electrolyte levels in our bodies. Chronic stress, alcohol and caffeine also deplete minerals. Symptoms can include things like headaches and dizziness.
*What do we drink? We try to avoid sports drinks due to sugar and artificial dyes since those wreck havoc on the GI system.

It's BACK TO SCHOOL for many of us! This time of year can be full of excitement and new beginnings however all the changes can be stressful. Temporary stress is ok however when this stress continues throughout the school year (or longer) it causes chronic stress and takes a toll on our bodies.
Some symptoms of chronic stress: Fatigue, difficulty sleeping well, food/carbohydrate cravings, bloating, weight gain, joint pain and brain fog. 🙁 Can you relate to any of these?

You hear the word "CANDIDA" thrown around a lot these days, but few people know exactly what it is, how it works, and how amazing you feel when you rid yourself of it.
You'll be shocked at how many symptoms you regularly suffer from will disappear when you cleanse yourself of Candida (I know I was!) 🙌
Candida Albicans is a fungal yeast.
It is present naturally in the human gut; everyone has Candida albicans living within them to some extent.
Our gut is also full of natural bacteria that feed on the yeast and keep levels to a low number to stop it from becoming a problem.
The yeast becomes problematic when it grows beyond normal levels and spreads throughout the gastrointestinal tract and body, turning into a candida fungus. This fungus is protected by a powerful armor called a chitin layer. The fungus wrecks havoc on your body.

Normally, before this gets out of hand, your immune system would identify and fight off this 'alien' intruder without a sweat.
Sadly, more and more people suffer from low immune systems due to stress, bad diet, or general ill health and their immune system is not equipped to fight off the fungus.

Hey Friends! Quick reminder about sunscreen use!
There are 2 types of sunscreens:
☀️ 1) Chemical sunscreen - absorb sunlight into the skin and act like a sponge and absorb UV rays (then converted into heat and release them from the body.) THE BAD!
☀️ 2) Physical or Mineral Sunscreen - created a barrier on the skin to reflect the sun's rays. THE GOOD!
Unfortunately most chemical sunscreens contain oxybenzone which is linked to hormone disruption, negative birth outcomes, breast cancer, decr fertility and killing off coral reefs. Other ingredients in physical sunscreens with negative affects are octinoxate, homosalate, octocrylene and avobenzone.
A study done in January 2020 showed the ingredients had circulated in the bloodstream days after application. ⚡️
☀️ Must safer to use a mineral based sunscreen containing zinc (or titanium dioxide) look for zinc oxide at 15% or greater - which is the only single ingredient that protects from UVA and UVB rays. Unfortunately the mineral based can leave a white look but the pros of skin cancer prevention are worth it!
🥚🐠 Also a great idea to eat up foods high in omega-3s such as salmon and eggs to protect our bodies from free radical damage and skin cancer.
😁 My favs: BeautyCounter (no white film but more costly), Thinkbaby (does leave a white film but kids don't seem to mind and affordable) and All Good Kids Mineral sunscreen.

So it’s summer and HOT outside!🥵 I know my energy level could use a boost after being outside and sweating out all those electrolytes.
Gatorade or other sports drinks can be an easy go-to, however they are packed with sugar! One bottle of gatorade has an average of 34 grams of sugar which is over the recommended daily sugar intake for children of 20-30 grams (depending on age). Sports drinks also contain artificial ingredients which destroy the gut lining, contributing to digestive issues and behavioral/attention issues (since the gut and brain are connected). Time to make a change! 🙌

Decadent Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Protein Balls 😋🍪
6 scoops of Vanilla LEAN
A splash of Milk
A dopple of Peanut Butter
Chopped 70% Dark Chocolate

Mix with enough peanut butter and milk to make a dough like consistency. Add chocolate chunks. Roll into balls and refrigerate. We are thoroughly enjoying these as a summer treat and keeps the kids away from the artificial dyes and processed sugars!

Note: start with a little milk and judge by dough consistency... you want the dough to be dense.
