Canine hydrotherapy can help!

Helping Dogs With Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) Have a Good Quality of Life 🐕

Canine DM (also known as Canine Lou Gehrig's Disease) causes loss of coordination in the hind limbs. The first sign of DM is slow rear reflexes, causing your dog to drag their rear feet, subtly at first, but enough to wear down their toe nails on the rear limbs faster than the front feet. Then a wobbly gate (ataxia) is noticed, along with weakness in the hind limbs, followed by complete rear limb weakness and paralysis (paraplegia), which makes its way up the spinal cord, eventually affecting all four limbs.

Unfortunately, this condition is irreversible and incurable. The treatment goal for dogs with DM is to proactively manage the characteristics of the disease and preserve good quality of life for as long as possible.

A multimodal treatment protocol — including intense physical therapy and low dose naltrexone (LDN), started as early as possible — can slow, halt, or in some cases, temporarily reverse the progression of this awful disease.

Today’s free blog post is all about Canine DM. Visit our website (link in the comments) to read it now.
