Chia seeds are incredibly healthy - but they’re not for everyone. ❌ Dr. Sethi

As a gastroenterologist, I recommend them often, but how you use them matters.

These groups should be cautious:

1.⁠ ⁠Swallowing disorders or esophageal narrowing
Chia seeds absorb 10–12× their weight in water. Eating them dry has rarely caused esophageal obstruction.
Always soak or hydrate first.

2.⁠ ⁠Sudden high-fiber intake
About 10 g fiber per 2 tbsp. Rapid increases can cause bloating, gas, or discomfort, especially in IBS.

3.⁠ ⁠People on blood thinners
Chia contains ALA omega-3, which may have mild antiplatelet effects. Large amounts should be discussed with a doctor.

4.⁠ ⁠Severe motility disorders
Conditions like gastroparesis or obstruction risk may not tolerate gel-forming fibers well.

5.⁠ ⁠Seed allergy (rare)

Important:
For most people, chia seeds are safe and beneficial — providing fiber, omega-3s, polyphenols, and prebiotic support.

Chia seeds absorb 10–12× their weight in water, so always soak them first.

My simple rule:

•⁠ ⁠Start with 1 tablespoon
•⁠ ⁠Soak in water, yogurt, or smoothies
•⁠ ⁠Increase gradually to 2 tablespoons

Used properly, chia seeds are one of the best foods for gut and metabolic health.

Dose and context matter.

When rice is properly cooled and stored in the refrigerator, it actually develops resistant starch, a type of fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria and supports metabolic health.

Just remember the rule:
Don’t leave cooked rice at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Cool it quickly, refrigerate, and reheat safely.
