A group of longtime golf friends recently started recommending Washington Health orthopedic surgeon Dr. John Costouros to each other and for good reason. After years of shoulder pain and mixed opinions from other surgeons, Michael Dougherty trusted his buddies and chose Dr. Costouros for robotic shoulder replacement. Now he’s back on the golf course, traveling, and enjoying life again, grateful for the care he received from Dr. Costouros and the Washington Health team.

Washington Health earned a three-star rating from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for complex cardiothoracic surgery, the highest category of quality with outcomes better than expected after national risk adjustment. The STS rating system compares cardiac surgery performance among hospitals nationwide, and only about 10% earn a three-star rating placing Washington Health in the highest quality tier based on national data from July 2022 through June 2025. We’re proud to share that Washington Health is the only hospital in the area to receive this distinction. For our patients, this means strong surgical outcomes and access to high-quality cardiac care close to home. This 3-star rating highlights the strength and consistency of our Washington Health and UCSF cardiothoracic surgery program.

Today is the first day of Ramadan, a significant and sacred month observed by Muslims around the world. It is a time of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and increased devotion to prayer and charitable acts. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs. Fasting is not only a demonstration of self-control, but also a means of empathy for those less fortunate. Beyond fasting, Ramadan emphasizes community, family, and charitable efforts, fostering a sense of unity and compassion. At the conclusion of Ramadan comes the joyous celebration of Eid ul-Fitr, a 3 day celebration of gratitude and communal joy.
