This holiday season, Capitol Eye Care Center is collecting new, unwrapped toys to support the Toys for Tots program, helping bring joy to children in need.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recognizes November as American Diabetes Month. Diabetes can affect your eyes in several ways. High blood sugar can damage the small blood vessels in the retina, leading to diabetic retinopathy, which is a direct cause of vision loss.

It also increases the risk of glaucoma, because diabetes can change blood flow and pressure inside the eye, affecting the optic nerve over time. In addition, high blood sugar can cause the lens to swell and become cloudy, raising the risk of cataracts.

These conditions often develop slowly and without early symptoms. That’s why an annual comprehensive eye exam is one of the most important steps in protecting your vision and detecting changes early.

Capitol Eye Care Center doctors are often asked if a vision screening at the pediatrician’s office is enough. The answer is "no". Screenings can miss issues with eye coordination, focusing, or early signs of disease.
