Growing Real Opportunities for West Fresno

“The Best Babies Zone Initiative is about ensuring that every baby born in Southwest Fresno reach their full potential.” Janice Mathurin, Program Manager

Selected in June 2019 by the National Organization of Urban Maternal Health Leaders (know as Urban MCH) as part of Cohort 4 of the Best Babies Zone, West Fresno Family Resource Center along with partners joins a learning collaborative of multiple zones that have successfully pursued several strategies such as community markets, receives training and support to help inform the implementation of innovations in four (4) census tracts with the highest African American infant mortality rates in 93706 zip code. Current partners working together to improve community conditions and reduce rates of low birth weight, prematurity, and infant mortality include: community residents; West Fresno Family Resource Center; Fresno County Department of Public Health; UCSF PTBi-CA; First 5 Fresno County; CityMatCH; University of Nebraska Medical Center; March of Dimes; Fresno EOC; and BLACK Wellness & Prosperity Center.

Established in 2012, with funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Best Babies Zone Initiative was piloted in the following three (3) communities nationwide with the goals of addressing a range of social determinants to health identified by community residents in each community: Castlemont Neighborhood - Oakland, CA; Hollygrove Neighborhood - New Orleans, LA; and Price Hill Neighborhood - Cincinnati, OH.
