Yesterday, our organization had the honor of celebrating Black History Month with an unforgettable, heartwarming event for our autism families.
Our incredible kiddos proudly walked the runway representing inspiring Black American icons such as George Washington Carver ; Artist Alma Thomas ; Kobe Bryant and Martin Luther King Jr. Etc.
Some of our participants are nonverbal, yet they showed amazing confidence, patience, and pride as they lined up, waited their turn, and shined on the runway. For some of our children, traditional theater or public school performances arenβt always accessible β which is why we are committed to thinking outside the box and creating spaces where every child gets the opportunity to be a star. β¨
Several of our verbal participants also bravely read poems, and vocally sang a song making the show even more powerful and inspirational. Participants put together beautiful collages too.
Our show brought together both neurotypical and autistic children, making the experience truly inclusive and reflective of our diverse community. Just as meaningful was the role of siblings participating alongside one another. These shared moments foster empathy, confidence, and a sense of belonging β reminding us that inclusion doesnβt just happen on stage, but within families and the connections that grow stronger when children learn, create, and shine together.
The celebration also included arts and crafts led by a talented local African American illustrator and arts educator Paige Mason who taught the kids mosaic art and paper weaving. Music from beloved African American artists filled the room, creating a joyful and energetic atmosphere. We were also proud to have Girl Scout Troop 5165 join us selling cookies and practicing their entrepreneurial skills while supporting our community. Special thank you to Play and Learn Solutions for their help with assisting kids during arts and crafts and if needed support during runway.
It was truly a beautiful day filled with culture, creativity, inclusion, and pride. We are so proud of every child who participated and grateful to all the families, volunteers, and supporters who helped make this event so special.
