🥔 Nutrition That Powers Healthy Aging

Many people think of bananas as the go-to source of potassium, but a plain potato actually contains more. One potato has about 900 mg of potassium, compared to roughly 420 mg in a banana.

Potassium helps support heart health, muscle function, and healthy blood pressure, making it an important nutrient as we age.

At PACE by IIH, our nutritionists help participants discover foods that support their health while keeping meals familiar, comforting, and nutritious.

This National Nutrition Month, we’re celebrating how thoughtful nutrition guidance helps our participants stay healthy, strong, and supported.

đź’ś Honoring Women Who Shaped Elder Care đź’ś

Social worker Marie-Louise Ansak saw a problem in the late 1960s. Many older adults wanted to remain in their homes, but traditional healthcare systems were not built to support them there.

In 1971, she helped co-found On Lok in San Francisco, creating one of the nation’s first senior day health centers. The model combined medical care, social services, and community support while allowing older adults to continue living at home.

Over time, this innovative approach grew into what is now known as the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), a model that continues to help older adults age with dignity in their communities.

Today, PACE organizations across the country carry forward the vision she helped bring to life.

Nowruz, the Persian New Year, marks the vernal equinox and the start of spring. Starting today, celebrations are marked by renewal, gathering around the Haft-sin table, and cultural traditions observed worldwide.

The Haft-Sin table, found in many Persian households, is a ceremonial spread featuring seven specific items that symbolize life, growth, and wisdom.

This week, our OC PACE Day Center staff set up a Haft-Sin table and walked participants through the meaning of each item, helping everyone learn more about this meaningful global holiday.

đź’™Nourish Your Heart with Seasonal Goodness: Heart-Healthy Fruits and Vegetables đź’™

Eating heart-healthy foods is a simple and delicious way to support cardiovascular health, maintain energy, and feel your best. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are rich in nutrients, fiber, and antioxidants that help protect the heart.
PACE by IIH participants work with a Registered Dietitian to create personalized meal plans that support good heart health and overall well-being based on individual needs and preferences.

Here are some of our dietary professionals' favorite heart-healthy foods:
🍊 Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit, tangerines) - high in vitamin C and fiber to support heart health.
🥬 Leafy greens (spinach, kale, Swiss chard) - packed with nutrients that help manage blood pressure.
🥕 Carrots & sweet potatoes - rich in beta-carotene and fiber for overall wellness.
🍎 Apples & pears - a great source of soluble fiber that can help lower cholesterol.
🥦 Broccoli & Brussels sprouts - full of antioxidants and heart-protective nutrients.
🍓 Strawberries (early spring) - contain antioxidants that support healthy blood vessels.
Some helpful tips:
✔️ Choose frozen vegetables and fruits, which are just as nutritious and often more affordable
✔️ Buy seasonal produce when it's at its peak and lowest price
✔️ Look for low-sodium canned options for convenience and longer shelf life
✔️ Add fruits and veggies to every meal and snack
✔️ Try simple preparations like steaming, roasting, or enjoying them fresh

Small, nourishing choices each day can support a stronger heart and a healthier lifestyle. Celebrate American Heart Month by adding colorful, seasonal produce to your plate! đź’™

đź’™Keep Moving, Keep Thriving: Heart-Healthy Movement that Meets You at Your PACEđź’™

This American Heart Month, we're focusing on small, consistent steps that can make a real difference in supporting heart health as we age.
One of the ways that PACE by IIH supports participants in maintaining their independence is by helping them stay active through tailored physical therapy, recreational programs, and wellness activities.
Staying active doesn't have to mean intense workouts. Even gentle, daily movement can strengthen the heart, boost energy, and improve overall well-being.
Here are some heart-healthy tips to stay moving and active:
✔️ Take short walks daily. Even 10–15 minutes can improve circulation and strengthen the heart.
✔️ Stretch regularly to maintain flexibility, reduce stiffness, and prevent falls.
✔️ Try chair exercises for a safe way to build strength and mobility.
✔️ Stay social while active. Walking with a friend or joining a group class can improve motivation and mood.
✔️ Incorporate movement into routines like light housework, gardening, or standing while talking on the phone.
✔️ Listen to your body and consult your healthcare provider before starting new activities.
Every step, stretch, and movement supports good heart health and an enhanced quality of life at any age! đź’™

As we celebrate Lunar New Year, we honor a tradition that holds deep meaning for many of our participants and their families. This season is rooted in culture, connection, and community.

Cultural celebrations like Lunar New Year are more than moments on a calendar—they're meaningful expressions of identity and heritage. We're grateful to celebrate alongside our participants and to continue building a community where traditions are respected and everyone feels at home.

May this season bring health, happiness, and new beginnings. 🧧

This month, we recognize Black History Month and honor the legacy, resilience, and lasting contributions of Black leaders, providers, caregivers, advocates, and community members who have shaped and continue to strengthen healthcare and social services.

Equity is an ongoing responsibility—in our communities, our systems of care, and in how we show up for one another. At PACE by IIH, we remain committed to listening, learning, and working toward care that sees, respects, and serves every older adult with dignity.

Along with our new look, we've also updated our core values to better align with our brand message. These values come directly from the words of our staff, who have defined what it means to be part of our organization in their own way. Each of our new values better represent who IIH is as a whole, and what each member of our team strives to embody throughout their interactions with participants, fellow employees, and anyone outside of our organization.
