We had such a fun time with craft night! Everyone picked their craft (painting, embroidery, etc.) and enjoyed dinner and an amazing s’mores board! Thank you to Amy and Careen who put this all together! We had a great time! 🎃 👻 🍂

🎥 We wanted to share an example of what a play-based session looks like with a client who is a gestalt language processor.

Play is such a powerful way to model language, but it’s not just about labeling items. It’s important to model for a variety of functions: how we feel, how we protest, how we request, how we comment 💬💛

It’s important to model phrases that honor autonomy. By giving her a phrase of “leave me alone” she is giving her the language that reflects her feelings and then honors it.

This is what communication through connection looks like. 🤝✨

Not only does this low-tech AAC board give children opportunities to make requests, it also opens the door to shared emotions and joy! When using our hallway spider, children can request that they want it to come down, but they also get to express excitement, fear, and preferences as they watch it
move.
It’s important to model a variety of communication. Showing how to comment, share feelings, and celebrate together helps children see that communication is about connecting with others in many ways. By embedding these opportunities in playful, motivating activities like cause-and-effect toys, we make communication meaningful, fun, and social.

It’s spooky season, and Kassandra is brewing up some AAC magic by transforming old toys into new ways to play and communicate!

We understand that encouraging your child to say “no” or protest might feel uncomfortable, or even rude, because of the social pressure to always be polite. However, learning to protest is an important skill. Sometimes this means protesting even when it goes against a parent’s wishes, like saying “go away”or refusing a type of food. These moments of practice build the foundation for your child to advocate for themselves in bigger settings, such as school or safety situations. Politeness, like adding “please” and “thank you,” can always be addressed later. First, we want to give your child the tools to clearly communicate what they don’t want, so they don’t have to rely on behaviors like crying, hitting, or shutting down. It’s important to remember that modeling protesting doesn’t mean you always have to give your child what they want. The goal is to give them the language to express their feelings, not to avoid the task. For example, if your child screams when it’s time to brush their teeth, you can model, “I don’t want to.” Pause for a moment to let that language sink in, then follow up with, “I know, but we still have to do it to keep our teeth clean.” This way, your child learns that their feelings are heard and valid, while also understanding that some routines and expectations must still be followed. At the same time. it’s equally important to build in moments when you do honor their protesting, so they recognize that their words hold value. You can embed this into their day by allowing them to choose what clothes to wear, say “no” to a snack, or ask to be alone. Balancing these moments helps children understand that while some things are non-negotiable, their voice matters and can shape their daily experiences.
