UCSF Fresno’s success and growth are a direct result of the dedication and inspiration of our faculty, staff, residents, fellows, students, alumni, partners, donors and friends. In each issue of Focus on UCSF Fresno, we introduce you to the people and in this case, a four-legged friend, who contributes to the greatness of UCSF Fresno through informal interviews.
In this issue, we feature Jillian, DOG, UCSF Fresno’s Therapy K9, who "matched" with us earlier this year thanks to a Wellness Mini-Grant.
Health care providers are invited to join the UCSF Fresno Department of Surgery and the Intentional Recruitment Coalition for the 2026 Central Valley Health Summit, focused on addressing key healthcare challenges in California’s Central Valley and bringing providers and communities together to improve patient health.
We loved celebrating our incredible faculty, fellows, and residents at UCSF Fresno with a lunch from Inspire Health Medical Group. We have nothing Bundt appreciation for our doctors 😉. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to improving lives and caring for our community. You embody the very best of academic medicine.

UCSF Fresno celebrated Match Day today (March 20) with SJV PRIME students and the campus community. UCSF Fresno filled all available residency positions. Fourteen of the SJV PRIME students participated in the Match, with 43% matching with residency programs in the Central Valley and three matched at UCSF Fresno.
A campus lunch was also held where UCSF Fresno program directors read the names of new interns and fellows who will begin training this summer.
Match Day is held nationwide on the third Friday in March. It's the day when graduating medical students who participate in the Match simultaneously open envelopes (noon ET/9 a.m. PT) that reveal where they will spend the next several years conducting residency training.
We look forward to welcoming over 100 doctors this summer!

Congratulations to Edward M. Kashian, CEO of Lance Kashian, for being honored with the 2026 Leon S. Peters Award. This award was established to remember and honor the legacy of Leon S. Peters and to honor Central Valley leaders, who demonstrated in their personal and business life, the values, ethics and character exemplified by Mr. Peters. UCSF Fresno was pleased to attend the 2026 Valley Business Awards, sponsored by the Fresno Chamber, where Mr. Kashian and others were recognized. Mr. Kashian is a supporter of and great friend to UCSF Fresno and as evidenced today by a full house, standing ovations and congratulatory videos, he is praised and appreciated by many near and far. Reaching Out to Aspiring Doctors (ROAD) was started in 2014 as a day long conference for students in the San Joaquin Valley who are interested in careers in health and medicine.
Since then, it has expanded to serve high school and college students. A pre-health educators day was added to equip advisors with the information and resources to better advise pre-health students.
More than 200 high school and community college students got up early for ROAD today. The Pre-Health Educators Day was yesterday.
Presented by the UCSF Fresno Office of Health Career Pathways, the event was two days full of information, resources, connections and hands-on learning to support and encourage San Joaquin Valley students.
Omar Guzman, MD, MPP, with Kaweah Health and a UCSF Fresno alum was the keynote speaker yesterday. Assemblymember Esmeralda Soria delivered welcoming remarks today, encouraging students to envision their purpose, know their why, and stay committed.
Numerous volunteers including health care professionals, health care students, representatives from health professions universities, community and non-profit organizations talked to students about available opportunities.
Thanks to all for their support including California Medicine Scholars Program.
Kudos to the Office of Health Career Pathways for another successful ROAD conference and for all of their hard work throughout the year to inspire the up-and-coming generation of health professionals.
