Olecranon bursitis is swelling of the fluid-filled sac at the tip of the elbow, often caused by repetitive pressure, minor trauma, or frequent leaning on hard surfaces. If your elbow suddenly looks like a “golf ball,” this condition may be the reason. Most cases are due to irritation rather than infection, but it’s essential to evaluate for septic bursitis, especially if there is redness, warmth, fever, or significant pain. Treatment ranges from compression and anti-inflammatories to aspiration when swelling is large or uncomfortable, and aspiration can provide immediate pressure relief and improved mobility. Trauma, gout, and inflammatory arthritis can also contribute, which is why an accurate diagnosis and proper evaluation matter before deciding on treatment.
