March is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Awareness Month, a vital time to focus on a condition that is often silent but can be life-threatening. A DVT is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg. The greatest danger is that a piece of the clot can break off and travel to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism.

Understanding your risk factors is the first step in prevention. Common triggers include recent surgery, prolonged immobility (like long flights or desk work), pregnancy, and certain hormonal medications. Even lifestyle factors like smoking or being over age 60 can increase your baseline risk.

The symptoms often appear in just one leg. Watch for:

Sudden swelling
Pain that feels like a persistent cramp or "charley horse"
Skin that is red or discolored
A leg that feels unusually warm to the touch

The good news is that DVT is often preventable. Simple habits like staying hydrated, wearing compression stockings during travel, and moving your legs every hour can make a massive difference. Your calf muscles are essentially a pump for your circulatory system; when you move, you help keep your blood from stagnating.

Do you know your personal risk factors for blood clots?

Read our latest blog, Preparing for DVT Awareness Month, to learn how to recognize the warning signs and protect your vascular health.

Standing desks are a popular wellness trend, but when it comes to your veins, the "sit vs. stand" debate is more nuanced than you might think. While sitting all day is hard on your circulation, standing perfectly still for hours can also cause blood to pool in your lower legs, increasing the risk of varicose veins.

The real key to vein health isn't choosing one over the other. It is about movement. Your calf muscles act as a "second heart" by pumping blood back up to your chest, but they only work when you are active. Standing still disengages this pump almost as much as sitting does.

The most effective approach is to alternate positions every 30 to 60 minutes. If you use a standing desk, try shifting your weight frequently, performing subtle calf raises, or using an anti-fatigue mat to encourage micro-movements. These small actions keep your blood flowing and prevent the pressure that leads to vein damage.

Regardless of your desk setup, nothing beats a true walking break. Taking the stairs or a brief stroll every hour is the gold standard for maintaining healthy circulation and preventing leg heaviness by the end of the day.

While many people focus on fitness or weight loss goals this time of year, your vascular health is often the missing piece of the puzzle. Your veins work tirelessly to circulate blood, and when they are not functioning optimally, it can affect your energy, comfort, and long term wellness.

Creating a vascular health action plan does not require a total lifestyle overhaul. Strategic, sustainable changes like taking movement breaks every hour, staying hydrated, and elevating your legs for 20 minutes a day can significantly reduce swelling and leg fatigue.

Healthy circulation is built on consistency. Simple habits like a daily walk activate the calf muscles, which act as a pump to push blood back to your heart. Pair this with a fiber rich diet and reduced sodium intake to help maintain healthy blood pressure and prevent the progression of vein conditions.

If you are already noticing symptoms like heaviness, visible bulging veins, or nighttime leg cramps, now is the perfect time to schedule an evaluation. Modern vein treatments are quick, office based procedures that can resolve these issues before they lead to more serious complications.

If you have been putting off treating your varicose veins because you are afraid of "vein stripping," we have some great news. That painful, invasive surgery is largely a thing of the past.

Modern vein care has replaced traditional surgery with minimally invasive techniques that are faster, safer, and much more comfortable. Instead of general anesthesia and weeks of recovery, today’s treatments are typically performed in less than an hour using only local numbing.

Treatments like Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) and Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) seal diseased veins from the inside. There is no pulling, no hospital stay, and virtually no scarring. Most patients even walk out of the office and return to their normal activities within a day or two.

The goal of modern care is not just to fix the appearance of your legs but to treat the underlying cause of the problem. Addressing venous insufficiency early can prevent future complications like skin ulcers and chronic swelling without the "downtime" of the past.

Are you ready to say goodbye to leg pain without the major surgery?

Read our latest blog, The Truth About Vein Stripping, to learn how modern technology has made vein treatment simpler than ever before.

Have you or someone you know ever delayed vein treatment because of stories about traditional surgery?

Your veins work constantly against gravity to return blood from your extremities back to your heart. This challenging task becomes even more difficult when veins are weakened by age, genetics, prolonged sitting or standing, excess weight, or other factors. When veins struggle to function properly, blood can pool in the legs, causing swelling, discomfort, and visible changes like varicose veins or spider veins.

The good news is that many aspects of vein health respond positively to lifestyle modifications.

Our Story

Elmore Medical Vein & Laser Treatment Center was established in 1990 by Frederick A. Elmore, M.D. At that time, and for the next 13 years, it has been the only full-time vein specialty medical practice between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area.

The seed was planted in 1977 when Dr. Elmore decided to focus on varicose veins as his special interest. Dr. Elmore became trained in compression sclerotherapy, a nonsurgical method of treating veins, developed in Europe. In 1990 Dr. Elmore decided to devote himself full time to treating vein problems and founded Elmore Medical Vein & Laser Treatment Center. In 1995 Dr. Elmore introduced the use of duplex ultrasound imaging to treat varicose veins with a procedure called Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. In 2000, Dr. Elmore became the first physician in the Central Valley to perform the revolutionary new procedure ENDOVENOUS LASER THERAPY (EVLT).

In early 2011, Mario H. Gonzalez, M.D. joined the practice. Dr. Gonzalez has been in medical practice as a Board Certified Surgeon since 1989. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor with the University of California, San Francisco. He has served as Chief of Staff at Community Medical Centers for the past six years. He decided to devote his practice full time to Phlebology (varicose veins & venous problems) and has joined the staff at Elmore Medical Vein & Laser Treatment Center. Dr. Gonzalez has since purchased the practice in August 2011. Dr. Gonzalez' vast experience has proven to be an asset to the practice of Elmore Medical.
