Manual joint mobilization is a hands-on technique 👋 used in physical therapy to improve joint function, reduce pain, & restore range of motion, and is particularly effective in shoulder rehabilitation. After injury, surgery, or prolonged immobility, the shoulder joint & surrounding tissues can become stiff or restricted. Mobilization helps:
🔹Loosen tight joint capsules
🔹Improve arthrokinematics (the way joint surfaces glide)
🔹Facilitate better range of motion, especially in abduction & external rotation.
Gentle mobilization also reduces pain by stimulating the mechanoreceptors in the joint, which:
🔹Interrupt pain signals
🔹Reduce muscle guarding & protective tension
🔹Promote relaxation & neuromuscular re-education
Common shoulder conditions treated with joint mobs/PROM:
✅Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
✅Rotator cuff injuries
✅Post-operative stiffness
✅Glenohumeral joint hypomobility
✅Impingement syndrome
In short, manual joint mobilization helps “reset” the shoulder joint, allowing the patient to move more freely, progress faster, & recover more completely 📈⏰
