Behavior Plus

Behavior Plus Behavior Plus provides social skills groups for students with autism, parenting classes using the Nurtured Heart Approach, and parent workshops.

Permanently closed.

Persons with social cognitive deficits may seem lost when confronted with common social situations. Although these individuals want relationships with others, they have limited success due to the difficulty they have with determining others’ perspectives, identifying others’ feelings, and responding to situations in typical ways. These social deficits interfere with their ability to establish and maintain friendships, and impact performances at school and/or work. Our Social Thinking Groups help students learn to relate to peers, as well as function better at school. Our Nurtured Heart Approach™ parenting classes teach families how to set limits and guide their children without squashing their spirits. Our workshops equip parents and educators with practical knowledge and effective solutions. We continue to provide staff development workshops for educators across the state and have presented to support groups, community organizations, corporations, and state conventions. Let Behavior Plus empower you to effect the change you desire.

Reflections for Today:
Time is a strange element. I am always amazed that the days can go so slowly, while the years whiz by. Or the days speed by and the months c-r-e-e-p. I’ve heard it said the difference in whether time is flying or creeping depends on which side of the bathroom door you are on. Could be true! All I know is my children somehow have become adults in their mid-to-late thirties. My grandchildren, who were born yesterday, very soon will be 5, 7, and 9! It boggles my mind.

Regardless of how quickly or slowly time seems to go, I seem never to have enough to do the things I want/need to do. I seem to always be in a hurry to finish the next task and cross it off the list. However, I no longer am happy with this life. The older I become, the more I understand that the most important things are not tasks crossed off a list, but relationships built, lives changed, and kindness extended.

Looking at my family relationships, I realize once-in-a-lifetime events are happening whether I am there or not. I’m choosing to be there. Looking at my long-time relationships, once strong and vibrant, I realize neglect has caused distance and apathy. I’m choosing to reconnect and revitalize. Looking at my past compared to my future, I realize there is much more time behind me than before me. I’m choosing to be present for more of it.

It is not about accolades, or money, or being at the top of whatever list one may be on. It really is about touching other lives and allowing time for others to touch me. It’s about not saying, “Yes,” so quickly, but pausing to consider what that “yes” will take away from my priorities. It’s about saying “yes” to things I “don’t have time for” because I know I will never have the opportunity to say “yes” to that again. It’s about going to ball games and dance recitals and weddings and funerals because I want my tribe to know I care and that I am supportive of them. It’s about being present in conversations so I can remember them tomorrow or next month. It’s about choosing kindness and grace over judgment and pettiness. It’s about getting my actions in alignment with the priorities of my heart.

Where are you in your life? Is the clock running your life? Do your actions reflect your priorities?

Here's to choosing wisely!

It’s National Armed Forces Day!
We wanted to shine a spotlight on a veteran owned small business this day!

The Behavior Plus Inc. is located at 902 S. Friendswood Dr., Ste, G, Friendswood, TX 77546. Nancy spent four years in the US Marine Corps!
It's owned by Nancy and her husband Jeff. The following is a short explanation as to why they decided to open this business:

“I had been working in a public school setting as a behavior specialist for several years and was alarmed at the growing number of students with high-functioning autism we were beginning to see. They were not expected to master grade level curriculum or grow up to become a productive member of society. However, the students we were seeing had average and above intelligence, average and above language skills, and average and above ability to do well academically, but because of the autism, they did not have the ability to understand social situations. I kept thinking, “We have all these students who are capable and can probably get a job, but they are not going to be able to hold a job if someone doesn’t teach them how to read people and play the social game.” I decided that someone would be me."

Nancy would advise small business owners to start small with something they are passionate about, if you don’t love what you do, you will struggle!

The Galveston County SBDC was able to help Nancy by advising with PPP loans. “SBDC has been very helpful. When COVID hit, I heard about the PPP loans from SBDC and they educated via their workshops and their experts on how to apply for a the loans and later how to ask forgiveness of the loans. Had we not been able to receive the PPP loans, we would not have survived COVID.”

It's April!! April is officially Autism Awareness Month, but don't you think it's about time we started having Autism Acceptance Month? We've been aware for a long time. People with autism are people. They love, they laugh, they cry, they work, they go to school, they pick themselves back up when they've been knocked down. They enjoy family and friends. They have hopes and dreams. Just like you. What, you might ask, is the difference between awareness and acceptance? I believe it's the difference between noticing them and knowing them.
