During this season of expected joy and connection, it is especially important to remember that for many people, depression is characterized by the loss of the capacity to feel joy or connection. This can occur even when external life appears well, the family, the job, everything seems fine.
You may be able to smile, present yourself each day, and fulfill your responsibilities, yet still feel empty and emotionally disconnected inside. Because of this ability to function, you might frequently hear from others, "but you don't look depressed to me".
Feeling this way does not mean you are weak; it signals that something deeper is occurring.
Remember, depression manifests in a different way in every person.
The most important thing is that there is no need to suffer in silence when there are so many options available to seek help and feel better.
