Unmedicated birth. The use of one's own adrenaline, endorphins and wisdom to cope in labor.

We have seen a shift in the number of people wishing to birth their babies without the use of pain relieving medications. Some are concerned about potential the side effects of using different pain relief medications, such as not being able to walk, stalled labor, effects on baby, etc.

Some wish to feel empowered and in control of their own bodies and birth experience and others wish to experience this rite of passage.

(Did you know our office offers a natural bIrth class? If you are planning a natural hospital birth... check it out!l)

How do you feel about unmedicated birth?

Twins do not mean Cesarean birth.

Finding out you are having twins does not automatically mean you will need a Cesarean delivery. It means we follow your pregnancy and make decisions based on what you and the babies need.

In our practice, we are comfortable supporting vaginal delivery of twins and we will help you have a vaginal birth with your twins when possible...and desired.

When should you come into the hospital?

Obviously there's not one answer to that.Because everyone has different health needs and different goals for their birth.

But in general, you will be more comfortable at home during the early stages of your labor. Unless we tell you, you should come in early you may find that your labor experience is better when you stay home a little bit longer.

Which month of pregnancy is the hardest?

Most people are going to say the first and last months of pregnancy are the hardest. The first few month can bring morning sickness and fatigue so strong that your couch is your new best friend.

Then, the ninth month rolls around. Your baby is literally the size of a watermelon and it's getting real clear that it *is* going to come out - which is both exciting and daunting.

Which time was hardest for you? Beginning...or end?

What actually is amniotic fluid?

In the early weeks of pregnancy, amniotic fluid is mostly water pulled from the pregnant person's body.

But toward the middle of pregnancy, it is baby's urine that makes up most of that fluid.

Along with that urine are nutrients, hormones, and antibodies. There is even some research suggesting there may be some pain relieving substances in there as well that factor into the baby's delivery.

What do you do when you've had a bad day?

Labor is not a bad day, but it is usually a day when you will use the skills you already have to work hard and accomplish the feat of birthing your child.

Whatever you do in other hard situations - those are good coping skills that you can use in labor. We do not change who we are just because we are having a baby and we have spent our lives building coping mechanisms.

Be it relaxing in a tub, being in your own space, being with people, being alone - It is likely that something you already do will help immensely.

The CDC thinks so too!

One of the best ways to protect babies from getting very sick with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a RSV vaccination that is given to you during pregnancy.

This vaccine is given during RSV season to people who are 32 through 36 weeks pregnant.

Babies born to mothers who get RSV vaccine at least 2 weeks before delivery will have protection.

Have questions? Let's talk about it at your next appointment.
