A female patient with a history of keratoconus was seen by Dr. Greg DeNaeyer. She had been wearing scleral lenses but required a refitting.

Her scleral topography maps indicate an against-the-rule scleral toricity pattern that demonstrated a 250 micron difference between the flat and steep meridian whereas the left sclera was spherical.

To help raise awareness on World KC day, check out the facts of keratoconus below.

👁️‍🗨️What is it? A condition where the normally round dome-shaped cornea thins out resulting in a cone-like bulge.
👁️‍🗨️How common is it? Approximately 50-230 per population of 100k.
👁️‍🗨️What can cause it? Eye rubbing, allergies, and can be inherited.
👁️‍🗨️What are some of the symptoms? Distortion of vision, sensitivity to light, and poor vision.

Scleral lenses are effective for correcting vision in persons with keratoconus because they do not require the close surface-matching fit of standard contact lenses.
