Is 13 really the magic age for a first phone?

Research suggests that getting a smartphone before 13 is linked with more mental-health struggles later on (things like low self-worth, emotional numbness, and higher aggression). But that doesn’t mean “phone = doom,” and it definitely doesn’t mean you’ve ruined anything if your child already has one.

Here’s what actually matters:
✅ Timing + readiness (kids are ready at different ages)
✅ Emotional regulation + impulse control
✅ Executive function skills
✅ Clear purpose, rules, and boundaries
✅ Ongoing supervision and conversation

The later we introduce smartphones, the more time kids’ brains have to grow these skills—but how we introduce the phone is just as important as when.

How are you approaching phones in your family right now—waiting, already in it, or somewhere in between? 👇

No topic is off-limits in therapy. Whether it’s anger, shame, fear, guilt, or something you’ve never said out loud before, your therapist isn’t here to judge you, they’re here to help you understand why those thoughts or feelings exist and what to do with them. Even silence is okay.

Finding a therapist isn’t like flipping a switch—it’s more like testing the waters.

You might not click right away. You might feel a little awkward at first. That doesn’t mean therapy isn’t for you—it just means you’re human.

Therapist Brittany Starbuck, LCSW, reminds us that you’re allowed to:
✨ Take a few sessions to find your rhythm
✨ Give your therapist feedback about what is or isn’t helpful
✨ Decide someone else might be a better fit—and that’s okay

You deserve a therapist who feels safe, attuned, and genuinely right for you.

When you’re parenting a neurodivergent kid, everyone focuses on getting them support… and somewhere along the way, your needs fall to the bottom of the list.

You’re juggling IEP meetings, meltdowns, sensory needs, meds, phone calls, behavior plans, and alllll the logistics, on top of work, relationships, and the rest of life. That level of chronic stress can take a real toll on your own mental health.

You deserve support, too.

Therapy for parents of neurodiverse kids can help you:

Make sense of your child’s needs and behaviors

Build coping strategies and boundaries

Process the grief, guilt, or worry you don’t say out loud

Strengthen your relationships and actually enjoy time together again

If you’re feeling burned out, snapping more than you’d like, or running on fumes, this is your sign that it’s okay to get help just for you.

👉 We offer parent sessions specifically for caregivers of kids with ADHD, Autism, anxiety, OCD, mood challenges, and more.

A tip to boost your family's mental health!

Some days, grounding won’t cut it — and that’s okay. When the sun’s out, step outside and let nature do its thing. A short walk can work wonders for your mood. 🌿💛
➡️ Need a reset? Step outside and see what changes.

In therapy, progress isn’t always visible. Healing doesn’t happen in a straight line. Some sessions might feel productive and energizing; others might leave you feeling heavy or uncertain. Both are part of the work. It's still progress, even when it's subtle.

There’s no “wrong” thing to say in therapy.

You can cry, vent, sit in silence, or say something you’ve never said out loud before.
Therapy is a judgment-free zone where you get to show up exactly as you are.
