As we approach another candy filled Holliday, keep in mind how you talk to your kids about candy. Let them enjoy it without the guilt. It’s okay to put limits on it, but avoid calling it bad or similar.

I love her way of talking about food in a way that doesn’t label it as good or bad.

What happens for both kids and adults when food is labeled as good and bad, they then apply that label to themselves when they eat the food. For example, “I ate a bunch of candy to day, I’m so bad.” The way we talk to ourselves about our choices matters. And the way we talk about food choices around and to kids matters too. To help break the cycle of diet culture we have to change the way we talk about food.

I love the posts by Kids Eat in Color. She has so many great tools and tips for helping kids learn to be healthy without subjecting them to diet culture. Here is a great example about ways to talk about cupcakes (or any treat) besides saying it's 'unhealthy' or 'bad' or 'will make you fat'.

Cupcakes are fun. So fun and we can talk about them neutrally. But what if we want to discuss some of the non-positive effects of cupcakes?

I was in a conversation with Alli the psychologist on our team. She brought up the point that if we say a food is bad, kids can often wonder if they are bad. Things get sticky when we start calling foods bad.

Are some foods bad for you or your child? Possibly. For example, I’m allergic to salmon. It’s bad for me. I don’t eat it. But I don’t say it’s a bad food. I say that I’m allergic to salmon and if I eat it, my body will do xyz - so I choose not to eat it.

We can say the same things about cupcakes. “Cupcakes give us a really big burst of quick energy, like a big push from mommy to the top of the swing set. And then the quick energy is used up in a flash, like us falling off the swing from the top. We might get fussy if that happens! Let’s see if we can feel when the quick energy is used up after we eat these cupcakes!”

I think it’s good to have

BTW, Real Easy Weekdays muffins have been my go-to for my kid’s cupcake needs for a few years now. They taste good and tend to have a lesser blood sugar crash.

If you have to choose one, do you choose icing or cake?

You are more than a number on the scale. You don’t have to be a certain size to be worthy of anything. Worthy of love, health, happiness, peace, food. You are enough just as you are. And you are worthy of all the things.
What if you just loved yourself just as you are? What would you do differently?

Happy birthday to me!
The way I love to treat myself is to go out and get tasty food! Food I don’t have to prepare or clean up after. I eat what I want and enjoy it with no guilt.

Once upon a time I couldn’t really go out and get food. I was strict with what I put in my body. I was vegan and didn’t eat anything “artificial”. I thought I was doing it for health, but it was very restrictive, and not that enjoyable. I also didn’t put anything in my mouth without tracking the calories…which meant I passed on lots of yummy foods I enjoyed.

Yesterday I found a cute local bakery. I got myself a chocolate croissant and a loaf of fresh made sourdough bread. Two of my favorite things. I ate them without guilt. They were delicious. And I didn’t have to do any exercises or restricting other food to “earn” the right to eat that food.

This is what normal eating looks like. Normal eating allows you to eat food for enjoyment and satisfaction. No foods are off limits and you definitely shouldn’t feel guilty for eating food ever.

And tonight I’m excited to try my Nutella cake. Guilt free. Happy birthday to me!
