Move With Confidence: 60 Seconds to Test the Balance Your Body Really Needs
When the weather is beautiful, a perfect day to take a casual hike or chase the grandkids around at the playground, but you refrain because you lack confidence in your ability to keep up while successfully navigating the uneven terrains.
It’s frustrating when we come to the realization that fear is preventing us from living the active life we love. But after an injury or a close call, fear avoidance often becomes the biggest limiter of our activity level.
At Performance Therapy Fitness, we know that to move confidently, your body needs to practice dynamic balance—the kind you use when active—not just standing still.
This is why top physical therapists use specialized, evidence-based tests to assess your anticipatory control (how your body prepares for movement).
Try the Confidence Check: Heel-to-Toe Stance
This simple 60-second test is often used by experts to measure the stability needed for confident movement:
Stand beside a sturdy kitchen counter or chair so you can touch it with one finger for support if needed.
Place one foot directly in front of the other, so the heel of your front foot touches the toes of your back foot (known as the Tandem Stance).
Hold this position for up to 30 seconds on each side. Did 30 seconds feel easy? Did you feel a strong wobble or need the counter? Either way your results give you the practical knowledge to build a plan.
This test is one small piece of a comprehensive evaluation, the Mini BESTest, that rehab professionals use to understand balance scientifically.
Confidence starts with an honest assessment, not guesswork. Our fitness programming integrates the essential elements of balance training that will help ensure you can move with confidence and start engaging in the activities you enjoy.
