The Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force of the Gainesville Police Department and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office participated in the Acute Stress Adaptive Protocol (ASAP). This resilience tool allows law enforcement officers to process stressful events in a way that honors their wellness support needs amidst the complexity of their invaluable work.

These recruits will be sworn in tomorrow as new officers for the Gainesville Police Department. It was great to spend time with them today to discuss how they can prioritize their recovery needs in a way that counterbalances the impact of the unrelenting stress of the job and interventions like EMDR that can be a tool to assist their brains in digesting the high volume of traumatic material they will face.

Thank you to Chief Brett Meade with UCF’s Restores REACT program for traveling to Gainesville to offer a training to retired and soon-to-be retired local law enforcement. Research indicates that wellness training is vital throughout the lifetime of a law enforcement career, from recruitment through retirement. Chief Meade’s passion for supporting retirees is an inspiration. Thank you also to retired Cpl. Alicia Davis, without whom we would not have been able to host this training and whose dedication to officer wellness is a reminder of how powerful officers supporting fellow officers can be.

FTO’s take on the immense responsibility of helping new officers build the competency necessary for advancement to going solo on the road. 2nd Alarm project provided an excellent conference on first responder wellness. One of the speakers, Retired Fire Chief Patrick Kenny, author of Taking the Cape Off, highlighted the importance of first responders learning when they need to take their own capes off to tend to their self-care and wellness. 2nd Alarm Project is an invaluable resource for first responders and any clinicians working with them. https://2ndalarmproject.org

A wellness training today for the Gainesville Police Department’s current group of recruits who will soon be sworn in as the newest group of officers serving our community. For so many in law enforcement, the gifts they bring to the profession that allow them to make the sacrifices necessary to protect and serve, come at the cost of prioritizing their own stress recovery needs. This training highlights the neuroscience behind effective stress recovery, supporting the brains natural ability to integrate trauma exposure, and self-compassion as a stress recovery tool.

I am excited to be able to offer the Acute Stress Adaptive Protocol (ASAP) as an additional support tool for the officers at the Gainesville Police Department. ASAP is an EMDR early intervention for both small and large groups of first responders. Today I led GPD’s peer support team through the ASAP as they prepare to become a part of offering this new resource to GPD.

These are the amazing Victim Advocates serving Alachua, Bradford, and Union Counties. They show up for community members in the worst moments of their lives to connect them with resources, hope, and healing. During the training we talked about how they can use self-compassion skills through a polyvagal lens to make space for their own recovery needs as they continue to navigate their important advocacy work.

It’s always great to see Lt. Shipman and GPD’s CISM peer support team. CISM Teams help strengthen the career resilience of officers. GPD’s CISM Team offers support and connection, which in turn helps prevent officer mental injury following exposure to a critical incident.
