🇺🇸 Thank a Veteran Thursday 🇺🇸
This week, we honor Signalman First Class Douglas Munro, the U.S. Coast Guard’s only Medal of Honor recipient, whose extraordinary heroism at Guadalcanal on September 27, 1942, saved the lives of nearly 500 Marines.
Munro was killed while shielding his fellow servicemembers with his Higgins boat, embodying the ultimate sacrifice. His legacy has lived on through ships, halls, and institutions named in his honor, as well as through his family’s continued service — his mother, Edith, joined the Coast Guard shortly after accepting his medal, and his nephew Cmdr. Douglas Sheehan has carried on the family tradition.
Munro’s Medal of Honor is currently on loan to the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, where it will inspire visitors with his story of courage, humanity, and selflessness before returning to its permanent home at the Coast Guard Academy.
At Comfort Keepers, we are proud to celebrate veterans like Douglas Munro by supporting today’s heroes with compassionate, personalized care. Just as Munro placed the well-being of others above his own, we strive to ensure that veterans live with dignity, comfort, and respect every day.
💙 Thank you, Signalman Munro — your bravery and sacrifice continue to inspire generations.
