🧠𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲🧠

Did you know? Utilizing storytelling can be a big help for memory recall. Instead of just trying to remember a few facts, get creative and make a story out of them.

'Our brains are better able to recall narratives because we have a sequence of events to follow. For example, you might need to recall Newton’s Three Laws of Motion for your physics class. You might create a story about a futuristic hero, Captain Velocity, who explores three planets in the Galaxy of Motion. The different planets could represent the laws of inertia, force, and action and reaction.'

🚨𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲!🚨

It can take about 15 seconds of scrolling on social media before coming across an ad for an item to buy. When we have our credit card information easily accessible on our phone, it can take only a couple clicks to purchase what looks to be the perfect new scarf or household item. However, these quick-click ads create a shortcut that hinders our ability to see if the website is verifiable-- often, it is not!

As the shopping season approaches, take extra care to be aware of what online purchases you are making. Here are a few types of online shopping scams, and the red flags that come with them:

𝑻𝒚𝒑𝒆𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑺𝒉𝒐𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒔
-Fake shopping websites
-Knockoff products
-Card declined scams
-Malware

𝑹𝒆𝒅 𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝑳𝒐𝒐𝒌 𝑭𝒐𝒓
-Prices are far below those of other retailers
-Hard-to-get products are available
-Reviews are consistently glowing
-Coupons and deals too good to be true
-Shady payment options are offered

This morning's coffee toast brings me an extra sense of warmth, and I would like to take a moment to welcome our daughter, Haley Mckenzie, who has recently joined our team to work with our pediatric clients. Haley, a University of Florida graduate in Communication Sciences and Disorders, is a certified Speech-Language Pathologist Assistant (SLPA) specializing in pediatric care. In addition to her current role at a pediatric clinic in town, she will be working with us to provide support to our pediatric patients. We are thrilled to have her join our practice and bring a new speciality to our team. As some of you may recall, Haley previously served as our patient care coordinator while pursuing her education. We are delighted to have her back and look forward to seeing her beautiful and warm smile again.
Haley is deeply passionate about empowering children to find their voice and develop the confidence that comes with effective communication. She derives great joy from witnessing children believe in themselves as they master new sounds, words, and skills, which reflect growth, perseverance, and joy. Her clinical interests include pediatric communication disorders, and she values the opportunity to provide compassionate, individualized care to both children and their families. In the long term, Haley aspires to pursue a master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology and continue her family's legacy at Divine Speech and Swallowing Solutions in Gainesville, FL. Outside of her professional pursuits, Haley enjoys spending time outdoors with her husband, friends, and family.

Our inspiring story this week details two farmworkers' bravery and quick-thinking when they saw smoke pouring out of the back of a school bus. It was reported that they saw the smoke before the bus driver even knew what was happening, signaled to the driver, and helped get all the children safely off the bus before the flames hurt anyone.

The community in Madera county is celebrating their heroic rescue. One of the men stated, "he believes the Good Lord had put them at that intersection that morning to save those kids, and that seeing his daughter among the onlookers at the board meeting when he was honored by their community was one of the best feelings he could imagine."

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 🤓

This week's word is a bit of a mouthful: 𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍

lack·a·dai·si·cal
ˌla-kə-ˈdā-zi-kəl

1: lacking life, spirit, or zest
2: languid

Used in a sentence: Feeling particularly lackadaisical in the summer heat, they lazily tossed a ball back and forth.

Fun fact: When folks living from the late 17th to the late 19th century had one of those days when nothing goes right, they could cry "Lackaday!" to express their sorrow and disappointment.

🚨𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲🚨

Most of us have received texts like these, requesting payment for a delivery. The message often includes a link that takes you to a seemingly normal website and requests that you pay $ .99 or some other small sum to get your package delivered. Watch out! It's a scam.

One person who called the fraud network hotline said the $ .99 charge turned into a $400 scam! To protect yourself, follow these tips:

- Don’t click on any link unless you can verify that it’s legitimate.
- If you’re suspicious of a tracking number, check it out.
- Go to the source. If you’re concerned that there might be a problem with a package you’re receiving or have sent, contact the service directly, rather than through the link.
- Guard your personal information carefully.

Today’s coffee toast is a truly an enormous one! As our practice has grown, we’ve been blessed to witness countless miracles, awe-inspiring healings, and patients overcoming incredible adversity. This young man’s journey is one of the most remarkable miracles. After suffering a traumatic brain injury in 2019 during a motocross accident, Dylan’s prospects for survival were slim, let alone achieving the incredible milestones he has today, but God had greater plans! Dylan began working with me around four years post-injury (2023). While some might think the chances of recovery were slim to none, after already being 4 years post injury, this story showcases the power of perseverance and finding someone who believes in limitless potential! Doctors thought he’d never eat or speak again. When we started, he wasn’t speaking and was being nourished solely through a feeding tube. I’ve had the privilege of working with him for the past two and a half years, starting with tiny amounts of puréed food and gradually building up to his current abilities. Today, Dylan enjoys steak dinners at his favorite restaurants and even indulges in all-you-can-eat buffets – with his favorite sweet tea… all without the need for a feeding tube! He now speaks in sentences, initiates conversations, and even shares jokes, bringing joy to everyone around him. He even gives us his famous Dylan smirk after saying something funny. This triumph wasn’t achieved alone; it was a collective effort. His mom sought out every possible avenue and therapist who shared her unwavering belief in Dylan’s potential, no matter the distance or time commitment. His dedicated caregivers, who traveled over an hour each way several times a week, were instrumental in his progress. Logan, Breanna, Hailey and Tammy, (Hailey and Tammy are pictured here) have not only supported Dylan during his treatments but have also carried over the lessons learned into his daily life, becoming cherished members of our DSSS family. Congratulations on your graduation day, Dylan! We are beyond proud of your incredible accomplishments! Raise those coffee cups extra high this morning!

Our inspiring story this week comes from the newly crowned TIME’s Kid of the Year for 2025, Tejasvi Manoj.

After her grandfather was almost scammed out of a large sum of money, Tejasvi looked into how common scams are. When she discovered just how many of the senior population are preyed on by scammers, she quickly mobilized a plan of action and protection.

At the age of 17 she launched Shield Seniors, "a website designed to educate the 60-plus demographic about what online scams look like, analyze suspicious emails and messages users upload, and, if the communications prove fraudulent, provide links to report them."

She continues to spend time educating the senior population on scams and to keep establishing the purpose and mission of her website. “This is supposed to bring people a sense of ‘You’re not alone,’” says Tejasvi. “A lot of people are embarrassed that they got scammed, but this isn’t something you should be embarrassed about. It’s just a learning experience. You should report it to help make sure it doesn’t happen to anyone else.”

𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲! 🤓

This week's word might sound like a cough or sneeze if you say it too fast: 𝒄𝒂𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒉𝒐𝒏𝒚 (noun)

ca·coph·o·ny
ka-ˈkä-fə-nē

1: harsh or jarring sound
2: an incongruous or chaotic mixture : a striking combination

Use it in a sentence: Between the blaring boarding call announcements and the cacophony of slot machines, the concourse at Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas is deafening.

Ironic that a word describing harsh sounds, sounds so harsh when you say it!
