We are so excited to welcome our new Patient Care Manager, Arianna, to our DSSS family! She is going to be an incredible addition to our team and she has such a loving heart for people!

“Hello, my name is Arianna and I am brand new to the DSSS family. I will be serving as your Patient Care Manager in the office.
A tidbit about myself: I enjoy traveling and trying different foods as I learn about different cultures, music, art, and history. I’ve been fortunate to participate in a few trips hosting students of lower income families and schools across the world to experience their first out-of-country educational venture, practicing local languages and deepening their world view.
In the DSSS family, I know I will continue learning and serving in a loving community.
Looking forward, I am excited to join this team and meet all of you—our patients, care-takers, and families.”

Today's coffee toast goes to one of our youngest pediatric clients under 2, whose mom bravely navigated a critical decision between two ENT recommendations for a submucous cleft palate. His mom sought my guidance, torn between tympanostomy tubes and cleft repair surgery. As a mom and a specialist, I understood the weight of this choice. While surgery seemed daunting for such a little one, my expertise in speech and swallowing led me to strongly support cleft repair. Three months post-surgery, the results are remarkable: the toddler now tolerates a variety of solid foods without vomiting or nasal regurgitation. I'll continue to guide mom through introducing new foods, celebrating this child's progress toward healthy growth. Kudos to the mom for trusting her instincts and making an informed decision - here's to many more milestones and a bright future ahead.

Today's coffee toast is not a story of a patient I’ve worked with for a long period of time. This is a patient and her mom whom I've had the privilege of meeting only twice. Today's toast is dedicated to the mom, a pillar of strength and resilience. Her daughter is on the spectrum, and from our very first meeting, I saw the depth of her mother's love, concern, and unwavering determination. After a recent move from up north, her daughter has faced significant challenges, and the mom's exhaustion is palpable. Yet, what's striking is the story she shared - a testament to the power of a mother's love versus the doubts of others. Despite being told by medical providers that her daughter's current state is her new norm, this remarkable woman refused to give up. The moment I met them, I knew that Haley and I had to join forces with them! The mom's eyes welled up with tears of joy and relief, knowing she's not alone in this fight. Her strength inspires me, a beacon of hope in exhaustion and sadness. Let's raise our cups to the parents who champion their children's causes, who refuse to accept 'no' for an answer, and who inspire us all with their unyielding spirit! I salute you and stand with you! I’m excited for our future update!

🫶𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲🫶 Take a moment to see the good.

A new, heartwarming trend is taking place called "Grandma Stands." These pop-up booths feature a rotating group of volunteer grandmas who lend a listening ear and offer wisdom to complete strangers. "Anyone can walk by the purple lemonade stand and sit down across from a real grandmother to chit-chat, ask advice, or just vent a little to someone who’s seen it all."

This trend began when a reporter directed a struggling friend to ask his grandmother for advice. It went so well that this same reporter had his grandma set up a virtual booth in Brooklyn. Now in McKinney, Texas, a team of volunteer grandmas rotate counselor roles for the holidays behind the same style of purple lemonade stand that this reporter first used.

One of the grandmas stated, “We kind of know in our gut that we’ve lost a lot of connection, and true face-to-face connection. Which I think is what people find so refreshing [about] the novelty of sitting down in that setting.”

🧠𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲!🧠

Did you know? Being able to access information quickly (i.e. on the Internet) makes you less likely to remember it!

It’s highly convenient being able to access almost any piece of information in a few seconds with a string of typed words. Resources such as Google, Wikipedia, and YouTube have been major players in a revolution of how we find information. However, studies suggest there is another aspect to being able to access information so conveniently: if the brain knows it can find an answer again so easily, it’s less likely to remember the information itself!

So, if you really want to remember a fact, maybe try the older version of the internet-- head to the library! The more work you put into discovering an answer to a question, the more likely you are to remember it.

🚨𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐦 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲🚨

"According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), at least $212 million was stolen through gift card-related scams in 2024"

In some cases, criminals will actually spend the gift cards before they are purchased. They’ll steal cards sitting in store racks, record the numbers and PINs, then reseal and replace the cards. When someone buys and activates the card, they swiftly drain the value. A survey showed that 25% of consumers have either given or received a $0 gift card.

In addition, many scams prefer gift cards as a payment. "Whether pretending to be a seller online or an official notifying you of a supposed debt, they’ll ask you to buy gift cards and read them the serial and personal identification numbers (PIN) on the back of the cards."

"Scammers may pretend to be from the IRS, for example, and say you owe money that can be paid with a gift card. This is a scam, says Pitt: 'No legitimate government agency will ever accept payment in the form of a gift card.'"

Today's coffee toast holds profound significance for me, a heartfelt tribute to a patient who practices Buddhism. Despite our differing faiths, we share a beautiful bond of mutual respect, understanding and a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of love. Love is the very foundation upon which our respective beliefs are built. One day he walked into the treatment room and he graciously presented me with a stunning, hand-crafted (by him) Buddhist prayer, eloquently colligraphed with the poignant words, 'For as long as space endures, And for as long as there are beings to be found, May I continue to likewise to remain, to drive away the sorrows of the world.' He then said, “No one embodies this prayer more than you”. His thoughtful gesture left me deeply humbled and overwhelmed with emotion, in other words, I ugly cried! In our practice, we strive to create a sanctuary where our patients can experience profound healing and unconditional love. His heartfelt gift now proudly adorns the walls of our practice, a poignant reminder that our mission is being fulfilled and that we will continue to radiate love, compassion and empathy, ensuring that EVERY individual feels seen, heard and valued. I raise my cup up to you this morning and thank you for such an extraordinarily thoughtful gift!

🫶𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲🫶 Take a moment to see the good.

Wade Milyard, a retired cop in Maryland has made it his mission to provide laundry services for those experiencing homelessness. His mission began a few years ago when he was responding to a domestic dispute at a homeless camp.

Soon after he investigated the disturbance, a voice from above rang out.

“Ask them about their laundry…”

Milyard heeded the voice, asked the question, and unknowingly set the course for a prayer-fulfilling future. The homeless couple he interviewed told him they typically washed their laundry in a nearby creek.

His newly founded mobile laundry service, Fresh Steps, has now washed over 2,000 lbs. of laundry with more on the horizon. Though it may seem like a small thing, Milyard says, "If having clean clothes can help them just a little bit, then my mission is fulfilled.”
