This day is observed in commemoration of the day in 1948 that the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In these times of dissonance and uncertainty, where the feelings of insecurity grow exponentially day after day, especially in marginalized communities, it is important we remember the importance and significance of Human Rights!

This year's theme "Our Everyday Essentials" aims to reaffirm the values of human rights and show just how essential they are for humanity on the most mundane level! This day aims to re-engage everyone with human rights by demonstrating how even in the many ways they go unnoticed, shape our day to day lives. Human rights are essential and by remembering that we can bridge the gap between everyday experiences and human rights principles!

Human rights are positive, essential and attainable!

Today the GCCC recognizes National Day of Mourning in honor of the rich history of native and indigenous populations around the United States. It is vital to acknowledge the role Native American communities have played in creating the fabric of this country. Today is not only a day of remembrance for their fallen ancestors but also an acknowledgement of the many challenges the indigenous people of the US still face today. Visit the links in our bio for more literature and information.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) started in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today we remember and honor the lives of trangsender, non-binary, and gender non conforming people who lost their lives to targeted discrimination, abuse or violence for simply existing.

is holding a Transgender Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil today at Bo Diddley Plaza from 7pm-9:30pm, feel free to come out and show respect and remember the trans, non-binary, and gender non conforming individuals that have lost their lives in our community.

Happy World Kindness Day from GCCC! Today we celebrate and acknowledge World Kindness Week and Day! All week long find different ways to spread a bit of kindness! Complimenting someone on something they're wearing that you think looks cool, holding the door open for the person behind you, reminding the people in your life how much you care about them!
