: We successfully matched with 20 interns (4-year residents) and four CA1s (3-year residents) who will join us this July, and one “advanced commitment” physician who will begin training with us as a CA1 in July 2027. Six of our incoming interns are from the UF College of Medicine.

These doctors come from a broad variety of backgrounds and medical schools and were among our top picks. We are extremely grateful to all the residents, faculty, and administrative staff members who helped organize, facilitate, and conduct interviews and resident selection this year, especially our resident recruitment co-chairs, Jess Mandel and Javier Garcia, and the Anesthesiology Education Office staff.

Congratulations and welcome to our incoming physicians! We look forward to working with all of you. 🔸🐊🔹

The UF Department of Anesthesiology’s Center for Safety, Simulation & Advanced Learning Technologies (CSSALT) has moved from the Harrell Medical Education Building to room CG-15 on the ground floor of the Communicore Building, bringing the lab closer to the department and making its training, simulation, and research resources more accessible.

CSSALT trains and educates learners and professionals on how to use equipment, practice procedures, and refine care processes via simulation with debriefing. Samsun Lampotang, Ph.D., the Joachim S. Gravenstein Professor of Anesthesiology, is the director of CSSALT and Christopher Samouce, Ph.D., assistant scientist; David Lizdas, engineer III; and Simon Mesber, application programmer I, are his core team, along with many student volunteers who obtain hands-on experience in biomedical engineering.

Did you know that Haven M. Perkins, M.D., was our first anesthesiology resident? Dr. Perkins began his medical career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. After he developed an allergy to surgical soap, he turned his attention to anesthesiology and joined our residency program at the age of 43. Upon graduating, Dr. Perkins joined our anesthesiology faculty where he stayed until his retirement at the age of 77. J.S. Gravenstein said that “no man had a larger heart and a greater love for teaching” than Dr. Perkins. Now, each year at graduation, we honor one of our faculty members with the Haven M. Perkins Lifetime Teaching Award.

Matthew McGee, M.D., alumnus of our anesthesiology residency program, talks about his experiences as an anesthesiologist aboard the United States Naval Ship Comfort in his article “Anesthesia at sea: lessons from the USNS Comfort,” which was recently published in ASA Monitor. In this article, he talks about leading the anesthesiology team on a mission to deliver essential surgical care to underserved communities across Grenada, Panama, Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, and Trinidad.

Dr. McGee notes that the journey and mission tested him and his team as anesthesiologists as they had to quickly adapt to changing circumstances and different technologies, such as ship delays and weak communication systems. From these challenges, arose a strong need for teamwork and an unwavering commitment to patient safety.

“Every anesthesiologist will face unexpected equipment failures, supply shortages, or communication breakdowns,” Dr. McGee said. “The resilience and creative problem solving forged during the mission made us better clinicians, better colleagues, and better advocates for humanity.”

A Brief History

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine was founded by Dr. J.S. Gravenstein in 1958. During his time at UF, Gravenstein’s accomplishments were vast. Dr. Gravenstein was the co-founder and original member of the Board of Trustees of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) and he led a team of scientists and engineers in the creation of “Stan” the Human Patient Simulator and the Virtual Anesthesia Machine (VAM). These inventions, created and maintained here at UF, remain some of the most widely used medical simulation devices both nationally and internationally.

In 1969, Jerome H. Modell, MD, took over the fledgling department, which at the time comprised 11 people. He served 23 years as chair, holding several administrative positions in addition to Chair and overseeing the establishment of a visiting professor program that has brought more than 200 professors to the department.

Over the years, various leaders have brought tremendous growth and innovation to the department: several fellowship programs, a visiting professor program, new organizational structures, cutting-edge technology, and more.

Today, the department is one of the larger programs in the country, achieving national and international distinction. The hospital’s operating rooms are completely full with high utilization and will continue to grow as UF Health expands.
