I’m frequently asked how to dispose of old medications. Tomorrow is the DEA’s National Drug Take Back Day. Clean out your medicine cabinets and find a drop off location near you.
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and anonymous means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse and medications.

To say 2020 has been a hard year is an understatement. All of us have felt the ups and downs and unpredictability of what this year has thrown at us so far. For some, this year has felt downright traumatic and will have a lasting impact for years to come. However, if we take this time to focus on our needs and how we can build our resiliency during these difficult times, we will all be stronger and better equipped to handle stress when life returns to (a new) normal. This is a great article that shares the idea and process of resiliency.
What are some ways you are building your resiliency during these challenging times?

During the last few weeks, we have all been going through so many changes and uncertainty. As a nation and as a healthcare system, this is truly uncharted territory. One that we are all trying to navigate as we go along. I, like many, have made the decision to work from home so I don’t risk spreading this disease to my patients and coworkers. Many of my fellow healthcare workers are not as fortunate to have this option, and they are voluntarily putting themselves at risk of being infected by this novel disease. As a nation, we are at risk for overwhelming our healthcare resources, including the most important resource—our healthcare providers and staff. People, PLEASE stay home so we can each do our part to .

This! Teaching young people tools to better manage stress and anger is such an important thing that often gets overlooked. I hope to see more of this in the future.
A struggling elementary school in East Nashville, Tenn., is incorporating mindfulness, but experts caution that mindfulness is not a panacea and programs should follow scientific guidelines.

Some food for thought about diet. The Mediterranean diet is backed by some serious amounts of research. And, even more importantly, it’s a delicious way of eating.

I became interested in Integrative Medicine through my own health journey. Realizing that our current medical system is often short-sighted and only focuses on treating disease, I sought out a different way--one that focuses on true healing and promoting wellness and balance. Being able to empower patients to take control of their well-being and offer alternatives to traditional treatment has been a refreshing change to my practice.
Integrative Medicine (IM) focuses on healing and achieving optimal health by taking into account the whole person and all aspects of one’s lifestyle such as physical, emotional, mental, social, spiritual and environmental influences. The IM practitioner becomes the patient’s partner throughout the healing process, seeking to guide the patient to restore and maintain wellness throughout their lifespan, using an individualized and comprehensive approach. This approach also lends itself to promoting overall health and preventing illness and disease.
Integrative Medicine does not simply cure disease, rather it promotes complete physical, mental, spiritual, and social well-being. Multiple modalities and treatment methods are incorporated in this approach, including well supported non-pharmacological and alternative treatment therapies. An IM practitioner will offer interventions that are more natural and less invasive whenever possible. Some examples of interventions included in an IM treatment plan include those based on nutrition, exercise, self care, resiliency building, stress management, supplements and botanicals, and mind-body practices.
Defining Principals of Integrative Medicine
Patient and practitioner are partners in the healing process.
All factors that influence health, wellness, and disease are taken into consideration, including mind, spirit, and community, as well as the body.
Appropriate use of both conventional and alternative methods facilitates the body's innate healing response.
Effective interventions that are natural and less invasive should be used whenever possible.
Integrative medicine neither rejects conventional medicine nor accepts alternative therapies uncritically.
Good medicine is based in good science. It is inquiry-driven and open to new paradigms.
Alongside the concept of treatment, the broader concepts of health promotion and the prevention of illness are paramount.
Practitioners of integrative medicine should exemplify its principles and commit themselves to self-exploration and self-development.
