🌸🐦 Why We Should Keep Feeding Birds Through Spring & Summer 🐦🌸
You may remember hearing that feeders should come down once spring arrives. Many of our parents and grandparents stopped feeding birds this time of year—and for good reason back then. Decades ago, birds had far more natural habitat: hedgerows, meadows, native plants, and insects were everywhere. Today, that landscape has changed. Urban growth, lawn monocultures, pesticides, and habitat loss mean birds have fewer natural food sources—especially during nesting season, when energy demands are at their highest. Keeping feeders up in spring and summer isn’t about convenience… it’s about helping birds survive in a world that looks very different than it used to.

🐣 Spring & summer are critical seasons - summertime feeding is really about quick access to high quality food. Adult birds need reliable food to fuel nesting, egg‑laying, and feeding hungry chicks. Young birds are learning to forage, and feeders provide a safe, dependable supplement while they build those skills.
🌺 What about hummingbirds?
Hummingbirds get about 85% of their diet from insects, yet people still provide nectar feeders. The birds use this nectar for fast energy for migration, territory defense, and nesting.

So be consistent with your feeding strategy. Keep feeders up for all birds in the area and these birds will help keep your insects in your yard under control for you!

🐻 Living in bear country? You still have options.
If bears are present in your area:
• Hang feeders high and away from structures
• Use hot pepper seed and suet—birds can’t taste capsaicin, but bears definitely can
• Ask us about bear‑resistant feeding strategies designed for your location

🌎 Feeding birds today is about changing our habits
What worked 50 years ago doesn’t always work now. Feeding birds—along with planting natives and providing water—is one of the simplest ways we can adapt and give wildlife a fighting chance.

Keeping feeders up isn’t “spoiling” birds. It’s stewardship. 💚

Stop by your local Wild Birds Unlimited—we’re always happy to help you feed birds responsibly, all year long.
