Earlier this month, one of our team members attended the University of Florida’s Little Miracles event.

The Little Miracles Program, founded in 2000, supports the health of mothers and babies in Jacksonville by focusing on early prenatal and newborn care. Their services include prenatal and infant care access assistance, maternity and childbirth education, and on-site referrals that help families get the support they need.

Our team was there to share information about LifeSouth’s Cord Blood Bank and the impact cord blood donations can have for patients facing blood cancers and other life-threatening diseases. It’s a meaningful connection between two programs working toward the same goal: healthier beginnings and stronger futures for families and other individuals in our communities.

Giving goes beyond the donor chair ❤️

We were honored to partner with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. – Eta Phi Sigma Chapter (Philo Affiliates) on a toy drive at our Gainesville headquarters. Thanks to the generosity of our community, these donated toys were delivered to a local daycare to help brighten the holidays for little ones right here in Gainesville.

🩸O+ is the most common blood type in the U.S.
🩸 O- are universal donors and hospitals always want this blood type on standby for emergencies.
🩸A+ is the second-most common blood type in the U.S.
🩸 A- blood type is in only 6.3% of Americans.
🩸B+ blood donors are best used for platelets.
🩸B- is the second most rare of all types with only 2% of the population sharing your blood type.
🩸AB+ are universal receivers.
🩸AB- are the rarest of all blood types at 0.6% of Americans.

Cord blood is the blood remaining in the umbilical cord and placenta after a baby is born. It’s rich in stem cells that can generate new blood cells and help treat patients with blood cancers, immune disorders, and other life-threatening diseases.

But how is cord blood donated? 🩸

The collection process is painless, and it does not interfere with labor or delivery. After the baby is born, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, and the newborn is safely in the care of the pediatric team.

From there, cord blood is gently collected from the umbilical vein, with no harm to mom or baby.

What happens next?
Patients who need a transplant quickly, those who are unable to find a matched marrow donor, or individuals from racially or ethnically diverse communities who face challenges finding matches may receive a second chance at life through donated cord blood.

Our LifeSouth Cord Blood Bank relies on early education and outreach to support expectant mothers, whether it’s your first baby or your fourth.

When you donate platelets instead of whole blood, a single donation can provide up to five times more lifesaving platelets for patients who need them most.

For those fighting cancer, recovering from bone marrow transplants, or surviving traumatic injuries, that difference means hope. Platelets are vital blood cells that help your body stop bleeding, and many patients rely on them DAILY.

Because platelets have an extremely short shelf life of just 5–7 days, maintaining an adequate supply is challenging. That’s why regular platelet donors play such a crucial role in patient care.
