Elizabeth (Libby) O'Conor
Elizabeth (Libby) O'Conor, born September 30, 1940, in Pounding Mill, Virginia, passed away peacefully on March 7, 2026, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, surrounded by her loving family. Her life was a testament to resilience, dedication, and compassion, leaving an enduring legacy in her community, workplace, and family.
Libby's early education began in Tazewell, Virginia, followed by studies at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. Demonstrating remarkable determination, she earned her G.E.D. as an adult and pursued further education at Montgomery College. This pursuit of learning reflected her lifelong love for reading and personal growth.
Her career was marked by steadfast commitment and advancement. Starting as a Central Files Clerk, she dedicated many years to the State of Maryland Circuit Court for Montgomery County, ultimately serving as the Chief Courtroom Clerk. She then transitioned to the Federal Bankruptcy Court in Greenbelt, Maryland, where she applied her skills as a workforce trainer and culminated her career as a Help Desk Training Specialist. Her professional journey was one she was deeply proud of, embodying strength and perseverance.
Libby's personality was a blend of toughness and kindness. Physically and emotionally strong, she was fiercely protective of her family and friends, instilling the principle that those who are able should protect those who cannot. She was generous with her time, talents, and resources, serving Saint Paul Catholic Church in numerous capacities. For many years, Libby taught children's Religious Education classes, participated as a Eucharistic Minister, and devoted herself to the Catholic Daughters, even serving as their Regent for two years. Beyond the church, she volunteered for decades as an Election Judge, demonstrating her commitment to service and community engagement.
Family was at the heart of Libby's life. She found joy in spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, cherishing family gatherings and creating lasting memories. Known for her humor and warmth, she delighted many with her famous chicken and dumplings. Her favorite pastimes included reading, hiking, playing cards and puzzles, visits to the beach, and, above all, activities centered around her loved ones.
Libby had a lifelong love of sports, especially softball, which brought her great joy both on and off the field. As an adult, she played competitive softball for many years on a team coached by her devoted husband, Edward. Her passion for the game extended beyond playing, as she spent many years coaching girls’ softball and inspiring young athletes with her dedication and enthusiasm. At one point, she even took on the challenge of coaching a men’s team, embracing the role with the same determination and love for the sport that defined her life.
Libby was also a devoted and highly knowledgeable sports fan. She rarely missed a chance to cheer on her favorite teams, especially the Baltimore Orioles, the Washington Redskins, and the University of Maryland’s football and men’s and women’s basketball teams. Whether watching a game, discussing players and statistics, or celebrating a big win, she followed her teams with enthusiasm and pride.
Her love of sports and family came together in the countless hours she spent attending the activities and sporting events of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a constant and proud presence in the stands, cheering them on as they grew and pursued their own passions into adulthood.
Though her husband, Edward Chapman O'Conor, passed away when Libby was just 42, a loss from which she never fully recovered, she drew strength from her deep faith and family bonds. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Robert O'Conor and his wife Rebecca, Edward O'Conor and his wife Tina, Laura Chipley, Kathy Hux, Tish O'Conor and her husband James, Stacy Johnson, and Mary Sweetland and her husband Randy. Her sisters Wanda Ward and Joyce McVey, along with twelve grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren, carry forward her legacy. Libby was preceded in death by her parents, George and Hope Brewster, her husband Edward, her daughter Lisa Ann Wyatt, her siblings R.C., Calvin, W.V., Billy Joe, Sue, Pansy, and Grace, and her son in-law Tommy Johnson.
Elizabeth O'Conor's life was rich with accomplishment, service, and love. She touched many through her career, religious dedication, community service, and above all, her devotion to family. Her memory endures in the hearts of all who knew her.
Funeral services to honor Libby’s life will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026. The memorial service begins at 11:00 AM at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church in Damascus, Maryland, followed by internment at All Soul’s Cemetery in Germantown, Maryland, at 12:30 PM.
