A small change in your daily routine can make a difference over time.

For those who enjoy coffee, how it’s brewed matters.
Pour-over, paper-filtered coffee removes more of the natural coffee oils—compounds like cafestol and kahweol—than unfiltered methods such as French press or boiled coffee.

That makes it a cleaner everyday option, especially for those trying to support overall wellness as part of their routine.

While coffee itself isn’t a “vision food,” the goal of this series has been to show how small, consistent choices add up. When you start thinking in terms of leafy greens, healthy fats, seeds, eggs, fish—and even how you prepare your daily coffee—you begin building habits that support your body more effectively over time.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about awareness.

And over time, those choices can help support a stronger, more comfortable “golden age” vision experience—where clarity, comfort, and consistency all matter.

Fatty fish like salmon, sardines, and anchovies provide omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA). DHA in particular is important because it’s actually a structural component of the retina, which plays a key role in how we process what we see.

These healthy fats also help support the tear film, which can be especially helpful for those dealing with dry, irritated eyes, and they may help reduce inflammation that can affect overall eye comfort.

Like many of the foods we’ve talked about this week, fish works best as part of a bigger picture. Pairing it with leafy greens, healthy fats, and seeds helps your body make better use of the nutrients you’re taking in.

For most people, adding fish a couple of times a week is a simple, practical step toward supporting long-term eye health.

Eggs are one of those foods that are simple… but surprisingly powerful when it comes to eye health.

They naturally contain lutein and zeaxanthin, two nutrients that help support the macula—the part of the eye responsible for sharp, central vision. They also provide choline, which plays a role in nerve and overall visual function.

One thing many people don’t realize is that most of these nutrients are found in the yolk, not the white. And how you prepare eggs can make a difference in how they fit into your overall nutrition.

Softer cooking methods like poached or soft-boiled keep the yolk intact and pair easily with leafy greens and healthy fats. Scrambled eggs are another easy option, especially when combined with vegetables. Even something as simple as a hard-boiled egg can be a practical, nutrient-dense addition to your day.

In many conversations, we also talk about the role of omega-3 support, especially for overall eye comfort and dryness—another piece of the bigger picture when it comes to maintaining healthy vision over time.

Like most things, it’s not about one food—it’s about how foods work together. Eggs can be a simple, consistent part of that routine.

Seeds may be small, but how you use them actually matters. When we combine leafy greens, healthy fats, and seeds, we start getting more out of each meal—not just more nutrients, but better absorption and balance overall.

Different seeds work best in different ways:

• Chia – best soaked (they form a gel and are easier to digest)
• Flax – most useful ground (whole seeds often pass through without being fully used)
• Sesame – lightly toasted to bring out flavor and make them easier to incorporate
• Pumpkin & Sunflower – easy to sprinkle on salads or meals for texture and added nutrients
• H**p – soft and ready to use, great mixed into meals or smoothies

When you pair these with leafy greens and healthy fats like olive oil or avocado, your body is better able to use the nutrients you’re taking in. It’s a simple way to make everyday meals work a little harder for you.

Sometimes it’s not about adding more—it’s about using what you already eat a little smarter.

Healthy fats are one of those things I bring up often when talking about overall eye health. Foods like avocados, olive oil, nuts, and salmon can help support an eye-healthy diet, and they also help the body absorb important nutrients from other healthy foods. It is one more reminder that caring for our eyes is not always about one single product or one single habit, but about the small choices we make consistently over time.

And because omega-3s come up so often in these conversations, salmon and other healthy fat sources deserve a place on the table too.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are natural plant pigments found in leafy greens and other colorful foods. They’re also found in the macula, the part of the eye responsible for sharp central vision. These nutrients help support the eye’s defense against blue light and oxidative stress over time.

That’s one reason leafy greens matter so much. Foods like kale, spinach, collards, Swiss chard, and romaine help supply nutrients the body can actually use. They are not a miracle cure, but they are part of the raw material that helps support healthy aging eyes.

This also reflects Dr. Jezick’s belief in feeding the body with quality nutrition. The better the raw materials, the better chance the body has to support protection, repair, and healthy function — including the eyes.

The big idea is simple: after 60, better food choices are not just about eating less junk. They are about giving the body something better to work with. And when it comes to eye health, that matters.
