SEK Genetics

SEK Genetics More than “just” a semen distributor, we offer embryo transfer & AI for cattle, goats and sheep. The hub for beef cattle reproductive services.

SEK Genetics-Genetic Horizons has always been more than “just” a semen distributor. We started over 30 years ago and our goal has remained the same - to provide reliable, cost effective, responsible service to both buyers and sellers in the cattle genetics industry. We do not “promote” bulls, but rather strive to be a hub for semen distribution. We are proud to work with the leaders in many breeds, and place our emphasis on proven, well accepted, successful bulls that will produce the kind of cattle our customers expect. SEK is home of one of the largest and most diverse semen inventories for beef cattle. Besides semen on leading bulls in many breeds, we offer embryo transfer services, artificial insemination (AI) training, AI supplies, AI equipment, and fast, accurate service. SEK is also unique in the fact that we provide a variety of testing services to producers and our customers, including the bioPRYN blood pregnancy testing, testing for PI-BVD, neosporosis carriers, bovine leukosis carriers, Johne's testing, and more. These new technologies are available to producers that can help them better manage their cow herds, avoid disease conditions and make their herd more profitable.

Neospora caninum is one of the most common, and most overlooked, causes of abortion in beef and dairy herds. This parasite spreads through infected dogs, foxes, or coyotes and can pass from dam to calf during pregnancy, often going unnoticed until it costs you pregnancies and profitability.

Testing is the only effective way to manage Neospora in your herd. A simple blood or serum test can identify carriers so you can make informed breeding and culling decisions. By identifying and managing carriers early, producers can break the cycle of infection and protect future calf crops.

Trace minerals may be required in small amounts, but their role in herd health is anything but small. A recent University of Illinois study, shared by Bovine Vet Online, analyzed nearly 1,500 liver samples from beef and dairy cattle and found that mineral deficiencies are still widespread — even in well-managed herds.

Trace minerals like copper, selenium, zinc, and manganese are critical for immunity, reproduction, and overall performance. When levels drop, the effects aren’t always visible right away, but they can lead to weaker calves, fertility challenges, and higher disease risk over time.

Even small improvements in mineral balance can make a big difference, supporting healthier cattle and stronger herds season after season.

Confirming pregnancy doesn’t have to be complicated. BioPRYN® makes it simple, accurate, and efficient.

BioPRYN® uses a small blood sample to detect pregnancy-specific protein B (PSPB), providing results with over 97% accuracy.

Producers can test as early as 28 days after breeding or 73 days post-calving, helping identify open cows sooner and make timely management decisions. No chute stress, no complicated equipment — just fast, reliable answers that keep your herd on track.

As temperatures start to drop, good management keeps herds healthy and productive. Make sure cattle are up to date on vaccinations and in good condition going into winter. Keep plenty of hay or straw on hand for bedding after snow, and double-check that water sources stay open in freezing weather. Provide shelter for young calves and older cows, offer extra feed to maintain energy, and make a habit of checking animals and water daily.

The first successful use of frozen semen showed that quality genetics don’t have to fade with time. It allowed producers to preserve and reuse proven sires, making long-term genetic progress possible for future generations.

OPU, or o**m pick-up, is a reproductive technology designed to maximize the potential of your top cows. During OPU, unfertilized eggs are collected from the donor cow and taken to the lab, where they can be fertilized through IVF and developed into embryos for transfer.

The result? More calves from elite genetics, greater flexibility in your breeding program, and the ability to produce embryos even from cows that may not carry a pregnancy themselves. OPU is one more tool to help you accelerate herd progress.
