Let's talk about our mental capacity.
To understand mental capacity, we must discuss resiliency. Resiliency isn’t about being tough all the time, it’s about recognizing that life brings challenges and still finding ways to keep moving forward. Every day, we wake up with a certain amount of mental capacity, like a battery. Some things give to that battery such as connection with others, rest, laughter, meaningful work, while other things drain it, such as stress, conflict, overcommitment, or even our own self-criticism.
Self-compassion is what helps us manage this balance. Instead of pushing ourselves past our limits, it allows us to notice when we’re running low and give ourselves permission to recharge. That might look like taking a quiet moment, reaching out for support, or simply reminding ourselves that it’s okay not to have endless energy. When we treat ourselves with care, we build resilience, not by ignoring the stressors, but by replenishing the resources we need to face them.
