My mother wanted to be a doctor in the 1970s, but was told that women who wanted to have families can only be a nurse or a teacher. I am proud to be a practicing board-certified physician today, and a mother of amazing children to whom I am very close and I have been a part of their lives through everything. It has not been easy. It took a lot of sacrifices in other areas. But my high quality patient care and my role of mother were never compromised and non-negotiable.
I thank the country that gave me these opportunities, and the work of courageous people in history to break those limiting beliefs and systems so that I can be the healer I am in my community and a role model for all who dream.

Tennessee Tech will host a free panel discussion entitled “Mad Topics: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) & Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Education” at 6 p.m. Monday, April 8, both in-person and online. Topics will cover what OCD and ADHD look like both generally and within the classroom, supporting those with invisible disorders and locating resources for support, and the lived experiences of adults with OCD/ADHD.

“We can learn more about and become more aware of these disorders, as well as the symptoms and debilitating effects associated with these disorders,” said Kinsey Simone, Ph.D., instructor of educational research methods at Tech. “Through this increased awareness, we can better support those living with OCD/ADHD, even if it is simply through stopping negative stigmas in their tracks.”

Dr. Malow is an excellent sleep specialist for kids, right here at Vanderbilt Kennedy Center. Here are some pearls of wisdom she has shared that are based in evidence and research... and that is something that I can get behind!
"Melatonin is a natural substance that we make in our brains. Melatonin supplements can help children with autism sleep easier. As a sleep doctor who sees many children with autism, I've found that parents, and health care clinicians caring for their children, have many questions about melatonin. How much do you give? When do you give it? Will my child become dependent on it? And, because melatonin supplements are not regulated like medications are, you have to be careful that the supplement you choose ONLY contains melatonin and doesn't have other substances. In this video, I'll talk about melatonin and preview my blogs on the topic so you can go deeper and get your questions answered. My blogs will also help you figure out how to navigate websites and social media so you can decide if melatonin is right for your child with autism. My goal is to help parents feel more empowered and knowledgeable to talk with their health care clinicians. I hope you will take a look!

Back to School thoughts: THE RIGHT KIND OF PARENT-CHILD CONVERSATIONS CAN BOOST CHILDREN’S CONFIDENCE AND SCHOOL SUCCESS

Want to improve your child’s school grades? It can be easy to slip into the habit of frequently asking how their homework is going – which can be perceived as nagging. Instead, research indicates you should focus on conversations that let children express themselves, explore their interests and build their self-esteem.

In one recent study, the number of conversations between parents and children had no real effect on academic results …but the type of conversations really seemed to make a positive difference.

This study used data from 1815 eighth grade students. Researchers found that ‘high-quality’ communication can have a positive effect on school performance.

This type of communication involved parents listening to and respecting children’s points of view. Children were also involved in making decisions about school and life, and felt like parents understood their emotions. Parents also gave helpful feedback.

By encouraging children to express their ideas and feelings and have a say in school-related choices, parents and caregivers can help children at crucial stages of growth to believe in themselves and become more independent.

Listening and communication skills help children at school and in life
The research study above is just one example of how positive parenting helps children. When children and teenagers are able to enjoy a close relationship with parents, they feel comfortable expressing themselves and also listen to their parents’ feedback with genuine respect. Building opportunities for regular, pleasant supportive conversation with your kids and teenagers is just one way to encourage these skills and help children reach their full potential.

Our office is proud to introduce something new for our patients' quality of care and convenience! CHADIS is an interactive online screening tool designed to provide your children with the best care possible. It does this by assisting in the early diagnosis of developmental, social, emotional, and behavioral concerns as well as a variety of health risks that can be difficult to see during a typical visit. All responses are completely confidential and cannot be viewed by anyone except your doctor.

CHADIS will save you time during the office visit. You can tell us about any problems or concerns you want to discuss, provide us with your child’s medical history and background, and report on the progress of your child’s development.

In order for us to provide you and your child with the best care possible, we need you to use CHADIS before each visit. Barry will assign you the forms to complete on your CHADIS account. We will review the results of the questionnaires during your visit and discuss any concerns you may have.

Recommendations for Social Media and smartphone usage in kids:
1. It can be challenging to strike a positive balance between
smartphone usage and the other parts of life that matter to tweens and teens. Rather than jump to judgment or frustration, adults should be curious about their experiences to meet them where they are.
2. Kids are often worried that parents will take away their phones if they reveal negative experiences. Let your child know at the outset that they can tell you about anything that happens on their phone and you'll help them through it.
