Sumner County EMS mourns the passing of Gary Thompson, who dedicated more than three decades of service to the citizens of Sumner County.

Gary’s journey in EMS began as a young volunteer with the Sumner County Volunteer Ambulance Service, at a time when emergency medical services in our community were still in their early stages. His willingness to serve helped lay the foundation for the professional EMS system that exists in Sumner County today. That volunteer spirit inspired him to pursue a career in EMS, eventually becoming a paramedic and serving the community for 32 years.

Throughout his career, Gary earned the respect of his coworkers and the patients he cared for. As we remember him not only for his knowledge and skill, but for his firm commitment and professionalism to the job. Gary was truly one of the pioneers of EMS in Sumner County, helping shape the service and profession for those who followed.

We are grateful for the years Gary gave to this community and to the field of emergency medical services.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.

A line of thunderstorms currently near the Mississippi River will be making their way into Middle TN soon. First up will be areas west of I-65 with the highest severe threat between 8PM and 12AM. Stay alert for damaging winds along with the possibility of tornadoes. If you're going to bed early, make sure you have a way to be notified in case a warning is issued for your area.

Today, members of Sumner County EMS Command Staff joined fellow local and state ambulance service leaders to meet with our state senators and representatives to discuss the future of EMS in Tennessee.

As our communities continue to grow, so does the demand for strong, well-supported emergency medical services. We had productive conversations about the challenges facing EMS today and the importance of ensuring our paramedics and EMTs have the resources, funding, and legislative support needed to continue serving at the highest level.

Thank you to State Representative William Lamberth, William Slater - State Representative, Senator Ferrell Haile, Johnny Garrett for Congress for taking the time to meet with us and engage in meaningful dialogue about the future of emergency medical services in our state.

As Winter Storm Fern moves on and our community seeks to return to normal, we want to take a moment to recognize and sincerely thank our crew members and our local agencies who worked tirelessly and without complaint responding to a high volume of incidents throughout this storm.

The various amount of calls included the evacuation of a county nursing facility following a power outage, working alongside our neighboring first responders on residential fires and carbon monoxide poisonings. We responded to several motor vehicle accidents, and assisted with numerous unfortunate ice-related falls.

While we were fortunate to avoid significant damage to our units, we were certainly not immune to the challenging road and weather conditions. Through it all, our crews remained committed to serving our community with professionalism, teamwork, and dedication.
THANK YOU to everyone who answered the call and kept our community safe. 🚑❄️
