Last month at our Shriners Children's Texas Mardi Gras parade in Galveston, we were honored to receive two incredibly generous donations that will directly support the children and families we serve. 🫶

The Bayou Billies presented a gift of $40,000, and the First Lady’s Project, led by Alyssa LaBlanc, presented a gift of $85,167. We are so grateful for their commitment to our mission.

We are beyond thankful for the Shriners and supporters across Texas who continue to show up in such meaningful ways. 👏

At Shriners Children’s Texas, we are seeing at least one ramen noodle burn injury a week.

“It is constant,” said Becky, BSN, CCM RN, Care Manager. “There are little ones sitting in mom and dad’s laps who pull it down on themselves. Then there are seven, eight, even twelve-year-olds pulling it out of the microwave, and it spills down their chest.”

The injuries often happen in seconds. A bowl gets knocked over while a child is watching a tablet. A cup tips while being carried to the table. These scald burns can require days of wound care and follow-up visits.

“Scald burns are typically the most common burn injury in children under the age of 2,” said Gene McGowen, advanced clinician RN for Shriners Children’s Texas.

Take an extra moment to supervise young children around hot foods. Use a sturdy bowl, sit at a table when eating, and avoid setting hot foods on tablecloths. After being rushed to Shriners Children’s Texas as a baby for a serious scald burn, Miles is now back — not as a patient, but as a grateful visitor.

Today, he returned to the hospital with his mom and younger brother to thank the nurses and bring them treats. The compassionate care they provided left a lasting impression on Miles and his family.

As his mom Allie shared, “We had such a positive experience here at Shriners Children's Texas, and today we wanted to say thank you to the amazing staff here. They offer so much wisdom.” 💛

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Texas Self Storage Association members, the association has now surpassed $3 million in lifetime donations to Shriners Children’s Texas, including more than $400,000 raised in 2025 alone! 👏

During a recent visit to our Galveston hospital, TSSA leaders toured the facility and presented a check representing last year’s fundraising efforts. They saw firsthand how the Texas self-storage community’s generosity is transforming lives in our hospital.

We are also extremely grateful to longtime TSSA member and dedicated philanthropist George Watson of Steelcreek Management and his family for their extraordinary $250,000 donation. To every member who has donated, bid on auction items, purchased a raffle ticket, volunteered, or helped spread the word, thank you. Your support is helping children receive medical care regardless of their families’ ability to pay. 🫶

Earlier this year, Angel retired after more than three decades of caring for children at Shriners Children's Texas.

“I’ve had several careers within this one. Every season brought something different, but it was always about helping people,” said Angel. As a UTMB Health nursing student, he first discovered the hospital during a clinical rotation. Immediately, Angel knew he had found a special place. ♥️

Over the years, Angel worked in the PICU, served as a charge nurse and stepped in wherever he was needed most. For more than a decade, he also served as a flight nurse, transporting patients across the country and overseas to receive specialized burn care in Galveston. When Hurricane Ike devastated the island, he showed up for his coworkers and community. He later helped guide the hospital through a transformational merger.

A DAISY Award recipient, mentor and trusted leader, Angel has been part of providing some of the most amazing care, anywhere. ➡️ Read more about his incredible career here: https://www.shrinerschildrens.org/en/news-and-media/news/2026/02/angel-on-a-mission

At Litzy’s recent check socket fitting, she tested her new prosthesis and explored different terminal devices! 💥

After an electrical burn accident led to the loss of her right arm, Litzy traveled to Shriners Children's Texas, where she has been receiving care since 2024. Now, this fifteen-year-old is practicing everyday activities like tying her shoes and writing her name, many for the first time since her accident.

Our team is proud to provide personalized care for every child, helping each patient work toward their own unique goals. To learn more, visit our website through the link in our bio.✨

Over the weekend, nine Shrine temples from across Texas joined us in Galveston for our annual Mardi Gras parade. Throughout the week, many of those groups also spent time at our hospital, visiting with our patients. Their kindness and support made this celebration even more special! đź’śđź’šđź’›
