UTMB Specialist in Blood Bank Program The UTMB SBB program provides comprehensive training in all phases of blood banking. There have been over 300 graduates as of May 2020.

Specialists in Blood Bank Technology (SBBs) perform and/or supervise both routine and specialized tests in blood centers and hospital-based transfusion services, using methodology that conforms to the Standards for Blood Banks and Transfusion Services of the AABB (American Association of Blood Banks). The University of Texas Medical Branch SBB Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of AABB Committee on Accreditation of SBB programs. This program provides 19 graduate credits through the University of Texas Medical Branch. Credits for the SBB program can be transferred into the UTMB Masters in Transfusion Medicine graduate degree. Additionally, individuals who attained SBB certification through the experience can be considered for the Masters program. The SBB program is located in the Clinical Laboratory Science Department of the School of Health Professions Building in Galveston, Texas. Yesterday we celebrated our 2023-24 SBB graduates and officially welcomed the 2024-25 class! We had a great 43rd Annual Stubbins lecture presented by Dr. Richard Gammon from OneBlood in Florida. Our 2024 Alperin awardee is Emily Wilson, IRL Manager at the American Red Cross in Dallas and Houston. Three graduates joined us in person, with several others joining by Zoom. Thanks to all who attended in person and by Zoom!
