UTMB’s Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Women’s Health (CIRWH) advances a wide range of research including vaccines, cancer prevention, and healthcare disparities. CIRWH helps early career scientists through our training grants for postdoctoral scholars and junior faculty. BRCA testing in young women enables early cancer detection in high-risk individuals and creates lifesaving opportunities. A recent UTMB Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Women’s Health study found that testing rates are still only around 25%. Regional disparities were also uncovered. Full text:

Over the past decade, there was increased use of BRCA testing for cancer prevention. Additional efforts are needed to maximize the early detection of women with BRCA pathogenic variants so that these cancers may be prevented.
