Happy Thanksgiving!
While we gather to enjoy good food and company, it’s important to acknowledge that this day holds a very different meaning for many. For Indigenous communities, Thanksgiving represents centuries of trauma, loss, and the beginning of a long history of displacement. It’s a day to reflect on the resilience of Native peoples, honor their histories, and consider ways to support their communities today.
For example, in the Metro Detroit area, the Anishinaabe peoples, including the Odawa and Ojibwe, have lived here for thousands of years, long before European settlers arrived. Their history is rich, and their culture continues to thrive. If you’re in the area, take some time to learn more about these nations and the land you occupy—it’s a great way to honor the Indigenous roots of Metro Detroit.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the joys we have, but also approach this day with respect and understanding. 🦃
