When a child suddenly stops talking, it’s rarely random and it’s never a reflection of their personality or your parenting. Regression is the body’s way of signaling that something deeper has shifted.
The nervous system, immune system, and gut all influence language. When any of these systems become dysregulated, communication can be affected. This is also where gene expression comes in. The genes didn’t change, but environmental triggers may have activated pathways that impact inflammation, detoxification, or neurotransmitters.
Regression may appear sudden, but the underlying imbalance often builds quietly over time.
If your child lost words after an illness, antibiotics, mold, or another stressor, you’re not alone and there are ways to understand what happened and support recovery.
