When I work with clients who are dealing with pain, illness, or long-standing emotional struggles, I see how hard it can be to imagine anything different.

Pain is loud.

Symptoms are persistent.

And the messages people receive are often discouraging:

“You’ll probably have to live with this.”
“This is just what happens as we get older.”
“You’ll need to manage it, not change it.”

I get it. When something is constant and in your face, it feels real and final.

And yet… that story leaves out something essential.

It ignores the reality of the brilliant, adaptive, responsive body you live in.

It ignores what we now know from neuroscience, epigenetics, and mind-body research: that our internal state influences our biology far more than we were ever taught.

Research shows genes are not destiny. The signals our cells receive matter.

And one of the most powerful environments your body responds to is your emotional and mental state.

Decades of neuroscience now confirm that when people repeatedly shift their inner state—their thoughts, emotions, and sense of identity—the brain and body reorganize themselves in measurable ways.

This isn’t wishful thinking.

It’s neuroplasticity.

Your brain is not fixed.

Your nervous system is not stuck.

Your body is not as fragile as you were told.

What Opened My Mind Years Ago

Back in the 1980s, I read research on what was then called multiple personality disorder. The clinical observations challenged everything I had been taught about the mind and body.

The research documented cases where the same person’s body expressed very different physical characteristics depending on their internal state.

In some individuals:

• One personality showed diabetic blood sugar patterns, while another did not

• One personality required corrective lenses, while another demonstrated normal vision

Same body.

Different internal state.

Different physiological expression.

Wow.

Later studies, published in journals such as The Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, confirmed measurable differences in vision, pain perception, and physiological responses across identity states.

This wasn’t magic.

It was biology responding to neural, emotional, and autonomic signaling. When we change internally, we become different people, and our physical and mental state change us.

Why Hypnosis Works

Hypnosis works directly with the subconscious patterns that shape our nervous system, habits, emotional responses, and sense of identity.

Instead of fighting the mind, hypnosis works with the brain’s natural learning and change mechanisms.

In a hypnotic state, brain activity shifts in ways that make the nervous system more receptive to change. This allows us to work at the level where:

• Stress responses are conditioned

• Fear and anxiety patterns are learned

• Habits and cravings are reinforced

• Pain perception is regulated

• Healing responses are either activated or suppressed

Decades of clinical research show that hypnosis supports real, measurable change in both mental and physical health. Studies and clinical outcomes have shown hypnosis can:

• Reduce chronic pain, including migraines and stress-related headaches

• Help calm inflammatory responses linked to autoimmune and stress-driven conditions

• Support healthier heart function by lowering stress reactivity and improving nervous system balance

• Decrease anxiety, panic, and phobic responses

• Help release unwanted habits such as alcohol use and binge eating

• Support changes in allergic responses by retraining stress and immune reactivity

• Improve emotional regulation, resilience, and overall well-being

• Strengthen immune system functioning by reducing chronic stress signals

Hypnosis isn’t a placebo.

It’s the brain and nervous system responding to new, repeated signals of safety and regulation.

Hypnosis helps shift the body out of survival mode and into a state where healing, clarity, and healthier choices become possible.

Why Repetition Matters

One session can create relief or insight.

But ongoing hypnosis sessions, hypnosis meditations, and self-hypnosis can rewire neural patterns tied to identity, allowing the body and mind to move beyond conditions we once believed were permanent or unchangeable.

Over time, people don’t just feel better.

They think differently.

Respond differently.

And they become different, better versions of themselves.



When I think of my clients who’ve experienced the most profound changes, they consistently share the same thing. They listened to their hypnosis recordings daily and practiced self-hypnosis regularly.

Research in clinical hypnosis, neuroscience, and behavioral change shows that hypnosis can create rapid improvements in pain, habits, anxiety, and emotional regulation.

What determines whether those changes continue is not willpower, but reinforcement.

The brain does not rewire from a single experience alone. It changes through repetition, emotional engagement, and real-life application over time.

Without reinforcement, the nervous system naturally returns to familiar patterns. Old habits, stress responses, and thought loops quietly re-emerge, especially when life becomes busy or challenging.

This is why people often say, “I know what to do … I just don’t do it.”

The understanding is there.

The follow-through simply has not been rewired.

Life has a way of doing its own thing and not going according to plan.

You set aside time to cook for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving feast… and the power goes out.

You’re watching a wonderful movie… and your headphones stop working.

You’re counting on a bonus to buy gifts… and instead your company announces layoffs.

It’s natural to tense up, spiral into “How will this work out?” and feel like life is conspiring against you.

But when you do, it not only robs you of your peace, it can shift you into a negative mood, and close you off from solutions and answers.

Research shows that when you slip into reactive, tense thinking, your brain shifts into a threat-response state.
The amygdala fires up, stress hormones rise, and the prefrontal cortex - your clarity, creativity, and problem-solving center temporarily goes offline.

In that state, your awareness narrows and you lose access to options and solutions.

But even a gentle shift toward a calmer, softer thought begins to change your physiology. Studies from Stanford, Harvard, and the NIH show that directing your attention to a reassuring idea, even something as simple as “It’s OK… I can handle this” activates your parasympathetic system. Relief can begin in this now moment - we don't have to wait for things to change

I work with many clients who want relief from mental pain and physical suffering.

One of the first things I show them is that they don’t have to wait for life to change before they can feel relief.

Relief begins in the now moment by gently shifting what they focus on.

When we change focus, the body and mind respond instantly: chemistry changes, muscles loosen, breathing deepens, and calm begins to return.

A client once came in completely overwhelmed with anxiety. His worries were real. But staying focused on them wasn’t helping. He was hardly sleeping, drinking too much, and procrastinating on things he needed to take care of, like paying his rent.
As he listed his fears, I asked, “How does that focus make you feel?”

He said, “Scared. Overwhelmed. Panicked.”
So I guided him to talk about something that always lights him up, music.

He started describing a song he’d just discovered: the rhythm, the lyrics, the way the video’s cinematography brought it to life. Within minutes, his whole energy shifted. He was lighter, laughing, and even hopeful.

Then he paused and said, “But this doesn’t solve my problems.”
That’s where real wisdom begins. Because it does help!!!

When you start from calm, your body stops releasing stress hormones and starts generating energy, clarity, and optimism- the very things that make solutions possible.

That’s the foundation we built on during his hypnosis session, helping him release the old beliefs that he needed to suffer or stay afraid to make things work.

Another client arrived with a migraine, burdened by caring for everyone but herself. I asked how that felt. “Too much,” she said. “Completely overwhelming.”

I guided her to shift her focus, to recall a moment that felt light and free.

She described a family vacation on the Oregon Coast, the ocean breeze, her grandkids’ laughter, the warmth of the sun.

As she spoke, her body softened, her tension eased, and her pain faded. In hypnosis, we deepened those feelings of calm until her migraine completely dissolved. She wasn’t escaping reality- she was reminding her body what calm and lightness feels like again.

Science confirms what we see in hypnosis every day: when you focus on something that feels good, your brain releases serotonin and dopamine, quiets cortisol and adrenaline, and sends a message throughout your system - you’re safe, all is well. From that centered state- healing, comfort, clarity, and energy flow.

Starting from calm isn’t denial, it’s wisdom.

It’s good for your body, your mind, and your spirit.

Calm helps you think clearly, solve problems, and live with greater ease and joy.
