We've even seen a fractured humerus!..but she didn't find her Pickleball injury very funny.

Today, more than 5 million people participate in pickleball, and 10% of those players only picked up a paddle since the pandemic began. And physical therapists are helping pickleball athletes stay or get back on the court.

Pickleball blends a trio of paddle sports: badminton, ping-pong, and tennis. The combination must be working, because pickleball was the fastest-growing sport in the US from 2019 to 2021, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.

Pickleball largely involves quick movement spurts of one to two steps either forward and backward or side to side. This gameplay comes with some common acute injuries such as adductor strains, sprained ankles, and Achilles ruptures. Some chronic, repetitive injuries include knee pain, low back pain, hamstring and adductor strains, Achilles tendinopathy, and plantar fasciitis.

Noe Sariban, PT, DPT, happens to be a professional pickleball player, so he understands firsthand the issues that arise with players. To avoid injuries, Sariban believes players should approach physical therapy as a wellness and preventive measure. "There are definitely things we can address prior to people stepping on the court."

It matters - more than you realize.

All my life I had wanted an doll, but I struggled because none of them looked like me. I wanted a doll without legs and most of the time, I’d cut my Barbie’s or dolls legs off so they were “like” me 🤣 So imagine my surprise when partnered with American Girl and made me a Jessica Long doll… with two prosthetics. I love her! This matters. Seeing something that looks like you matters. Thanks so so much for making this doll. I’ll keep her forever 🦿🦿

This story reminds me of a 27 year old patient I worked with about 7 years ago. He had chronic and constant left knee pain (and no history of back pain). His ortho told him, based on his radiographs, he had osteoarthritis and needed a total knee replacement (and no - no comparison radiographs were done on the right knee).
Poor guy had his - and afterwards, he continued to have the same exact pain in his knee. I met him 4 weeks after his replacement - he was so upset that he still was unable to work, and he couldn't coach his son's baseball team.
I had only taken Part A of the McKenzie Method at that time, but figured it was worth a shot.
I screened his back following the protocol... And for the first time in three years, he was pain-free.
* Let that digest. A 27 year old man had a total knee replacement - but the localized knee pain was not from the knee.
Before you have a joint replaced, or some other invasive surgery, come in and see us at first - we'll make it worth your time.
