๐ง Pose of the Week ๐ง
Supta Matsyendrasana | Supine Twist ๐
Supta = Reclining | Matsyendra = Lord of the Fishes | Asana = Pose
Named after the great yoga sage Matsyendranath, Supine Twist is the body's built-in reset button. Lying on your back, one knee draws across the body as you open into a gentle, delicious spiral. It's the pose your spine has been asking for all day. ๐
โจ Benefits:
โข Releases tension in the spine, hips, and lower back
โข Stimulates and detoxifies the digestive organs
โข Stretches the chest, shoulders, and outer hip
โข Calms the nervous system and relieves stress
โข Helps neutralize the spine after deeper backbends or forward folds
๐ Alignment Tips:
โข Keep both shoulders grounded โ let the twist come from the spine, not the shoulders
โข Stack the knees if twisting with both legs, or let the top knee rest on a block for support
โข Extend the opposite arm long and let the gaze follow โ or keep it neutral if the neck is sensitive
โข Never force the knee to the floor โ gravity will do the work in its own time
โข Breathe INTO the twist โ each exhale invites a little more release ๐ฌ๏ธ
๐ Eight Limbs Connection:
Supta Matsyendrasana beautifully embodies Saucha โ the first Niyama and second limb of yoga, meaning purity or cleanliness. Just as we wring out a wet cloth, this twist wrings out stagnant energy, tension, and toxins from the body. It's a physical act of purification โ clearing space so that something fresh and new can flow in. โจ
