Tough loss. Close game. Great competition.

A deal is a deal. After a close Sweet 16 game between Nebraska and Iowa, we’re highlighting six facts about Iowa agriculture and the important role it plays in feeding and fueling our country.

We’ll give credit where it’s due. From leading the nation in corn, pork, and egg production to major investments in soil health and water quality, Iowa farmers are doing some impressive work.

Congratulations on a great game, Iowa Farm Bureau .

(Nebraska still holds the top spot in our book. 😉)

The Hancock County Extension office will host a free, one-hour learning session for private well owners on April 9, 2026. The program will help attendees understand their well’s water quality and connect them to resources to manage their well.

Did you know that Iowa has a unique funding source for free or low-cost annual testing of private wells? Or that some water pollutants are odorless, tasteless and will not be removed by boiling water? If you’re curious about the answers to these questions, then take advantage of the upcoming learning session which will detail how to test your well and who can help, common contaminants, and factors that affect well water quality.

The program will be taught by Catherine DeLong, Water Quality Program Manager for ISU Extension and Outreach. According to DeLong, “About 230,000 Iowans rely on private wells as their home’s main water source, yet many do not know they should be testing once a year and that Iowa has a unique funding source to help cover the cost of testing.”

The free program will take place on April 9th from 6:00 pm to 7:15 pm at the Hancock County Extension office located at 327 West 8th Street, Garner.

Pre-registration is requested; to RSVP contact the Hancock County Extension office by phone, (641) 923-2856 or email xhancock@iastate.edu.

On Tuesday, Jan. 20 Hancock County Farm Bureau Board of Directors sponsored their second free popcorn/best shot contest in Garner as they played West Hancock in their varsity girl’s and boys’ basketball matchups. We handed out 320 bags of free popcorn to those in attendance!!

Our Adult Division Best Shot participant was Travis Schleusner and our Youth Best Shot participant was Hadley Larkin. Each contestant was asked 2 ag related questions for the chance to win $100. For every correct answer, the closer to the basket each person got to shoot for the prize money.

Hadley made her shot and won her $100! Travis missed, so the money was then donated to GHV’s FFA Chapter.
