At my eldest son’s 11 year well visit, he received Tdap vaccine, HPV vaccine, and MCV4 vaccine, all together, all at the same time. He was a bit annoyed with me and then got over it in about 10 minutes. I kept asking him if his arms were sore or bothering him, and he said the only thing bothering him was me checking on him and asking him how he felt so many times. You might ask why are Tdap, MCV4 and HPV all often given at age 11. There are several reasons. One is that kids go through a growth spurt around this age, and so their immune development also goes through a growth spurt. Tweens have a robust response to immunizations given at this age. The immunization schedule is timed to work optimally with the growth of children’s immune systems. Time has gone by so fast. It feels like yesterday my son was just a year old and I was bringing him in for his one year check up, where he received MMR vaccine, chickenpox vaccine, and hepatitis A vaccine, also all at the same time. The person who should be advising you on which vaccines your child should receive, and when, and why, is the pediatrician you chose for your child. —Dr. Troy

Folic acid helps prevent major birth defects of the brain and spine, making it an important B vitamin during pregnancy. Pregnant patients need 600 micrograms of folic acid daily, so adding a prenatal vitamin with at least 400 micrograms of folic acid to a healthy diet is key. Learn more: https://bit.ly/4ehujfb

To protect as many people as possible, AAP recommends that every newborn get the Hepatitis B vaccine as soon as they’re born. Why? Because if a mother has hepatitis B, she can pass it to her baby during birth... and many with hepatitis B don’t know they have it until they face serious liver problems later in life.

Often times, when adults are infected with hepatitis B, their immune system is able to overcome the virus so that it’s no longer a threat. But babies' immune systems aren’t as strong, so vaccinating newborns just after delivery allows their immune system to fight the infection quickly if exposed.

All vaccines contain antigens that help the body create the immune response needed to protect against an infection. Did you know that kids are exposed to 2,000 - 6,000 antigens every day just by playing on the playground or riding public transit? That’s way more than the number of antigens in any combination of vaccines on the current schedule!

There is no benefit to delaying vaccines – doing so can put your child’s health at risk, especially as the new school year approaches. If you have any questions or concerns about vaccinations for your child, talk with your pediatrician or visit our website.
